Who will win the Cricket World Cup 2011?

The ICC Cricket World Cup fever is at its peak. The World Cup 2011 mania can be easily felt.

Whereas, cricket fans are indulged in different activities to cheer up their favourite teams, the cricket pundits are busy in guessing possible winner of this year’s World Cup.

In India, where cricket is not less than a religion, people are organizing yajna and prayers for Team India’s success in the World Cup 2011, starting from the February 19.

Debate and discussion over the favourite teams of the quadrennial event are doing rounds these days on several news channels.

Experts believe that there are four strong contenders for coveted trophy, including India, South Africa, Sri Lanka and defending Champion Australia.

Sri Lanka is the only host country to win the World Cup (1996). Underestimating Sri Lanka’s claim will be big mistake. They have good youngsters and allrounders in the side, who can capable to turn the table before any side in the world.

As far as South Africa is concerned, they are one of the strongest sides in the world. But they are known as big chokers. Experts believe that Proteas can break the jinx this year. South Africans are expected to enter the final but it will be totally depends upon their performance in crucial matches. They play well in league matches but fail to hold the nerve during quarterfinal and semifinal.

Defending Champion Australia, however, witnessed severe slump in their performance in the past two years but they are still favourite side. Australia has the good record of playing in the sub-continent. 

We should not forget that Aussies are the most successful teams in the World Cup and they are still number one side in the ICC ODI rankings.

Apart from these four top contenders, there are some dark horses in the World Cup 2011. England and Pakistan are the most unpredictable side and they can do major upsets.

World Cup 2011: Brian Lara tips India to win World Cup at home

NEW DELHI: West Indies batting legend Brian Lara on Tuesday picked India as favourites to win the World Cup starting next month but warned they would face enormous pressure playing before home crowds. 

Lara, 41, said Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men have been in top form in both Tests and one-dayers leading up the showpiece event, which will be hosted by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. 

"With the World Cup being held in Asia, India are definitely the favourites," the former West Indies skipper told reporters after conducting a coaching clinic for youngsters at the Firoz Shah Kotla stadium in New Delhi.  

"India have been on the top of their game, they will be a very tough team to beat. They have a well-balanced team that can compete with anyone in the world, but playing before home crowds will not be easy. 

"The key will be to build the right momentum. You must start slowly and then build up as it is a long-drawn tournament. As hosts, India may find it difficult because they would want to start on top and stay on top. 

"They have to ensure that they do not run out of steam. This requires both physical and mental strength." 

India have won the World Cup only once - in 1983 - and were runners up in the 2003 tournament. Their 2007 outing in the West Indies ended in a disastrous first-round exit. 

Lara, whose 400 not out remains a Test world record, also rated South Africa as a side capable of winning the coveted trophy but expressed doubts over whether they would be able to break their World Cup jinx. 

"South Africa are a very good team. They can play consistently good cricket. But they have a bit of World Cup bogey which is why I won't put my money on them." 

The South Africans are yet to win the World Cup after coming close in 1992 when they made it to the semifinals before falling victim to a controversial ruling on matches delayed by rain. 

As one of the World Cup hosts in 2003, South Africa were billed to become the first nation to win the biggest tournament on home soil but they failed to reach the Super Sixes. 

The Proteas reached the last-four in 2007 as well but crumbled to a seven-wicket defeat to Australia after scoring just 149. 

The World Cup begins on February 19 with India taking on Bangladesh in the opening tie in Dhaka. 

Lara, recently appointed as a batting consultant by Zimbabwe, said his larger role in the struggling side was to lift the morale of the players. 

"Zimbabwe are definitely not one of the fancied teams. They have got some very good players but their self-belief is low. My role is to build team spirit and confidence. 

"If they can spring a surprise or two, it will be very good."

Bryan Adams to open ICC Cricket World Cup

The biggest event of the year, the ICC Cricket World Cup, is bound to get bigger, this time around. Pop icon Bryan Adams who is scheduled to tour India around the same time will perform at the opening ceremony on February 17, in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Says Sunil D’Sa, vice president marketing,

Universal Music India, “Bryan Adams was always going to be part of the opening ceremony of the Cricket World Cup. The decision hadn’t been confirmed because of his dates and busy schedule. Since he had other commitments, his performance hadn’t fallen in place all this while. But it’s finally confirmed that the Canadian singer will perform at the opening ceremony.”

Though Adams is likely to perform three songs along with his band, D’Sa wasn’t forthcoming on the setlist. “We would like to keep the three songs he will play as a surprise. I don’t want to ruin the surprise. He knows how popular Summer of ’69… is in India and the rest of the subcontinent. He and his management have been very clear about not disclosing any names, but he will surely play his three most popular songs. So you know what to expect,” he hints. 

His first time

It’s also been revealed that on the following day, February 18, Adams will host his first-ever concert in the Bangladeshi capital. “Adams has also lined up an hour-long acoustic concert where he will promote his Bare Bones album,” says D’Sa.

This year, Adams’s home country Canada is also part of the World Cup. “Adams is aware that his country is part of the tournament. I am assuming he will cheer for Canada, but since he’s on the road so much, I don’t know how much time he will get to watch the World Cup,” he adds

Lara: South Africa favorite for cricket World Cup

Brian Lara favors South Africa to win the cricket World Cup but says it needs to ignore the bad luck which has plagued its five previous campaigns.

The former West Indies captain says South Africa, a semifinalist on three occasions, "is capable of playing consistent cricket as is required in a long tournament like the World Cup," but he would probably not bet on it because it has a World Cup "bogey."

Lara named Australia, England and India as other teams to watch out for in the 14-team tournament to be hosted jointly by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh from Feb. 19.

Lara was on the sidelines of a cricket clinic at Ferozeshah Kotla ground.

Dhaka prepares to host cricket World Cup

DHAKA: Bangladesh Thursday gave car owners here one week to give their old vehicles a fresh coat of paint to make them shine in time for the ICC World Cup tournament.

The car owners in Chittagong port town have to get their vehicles painted by Feb 28. Otherwise, mobile courts will take action against them from March 1.

World Cup matches will be held in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka from Feb 19 to April 2.

"Fitness certificate and route permit would be cancelled of those vehicles if found plying on the city roads after the timeline," Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain said at a meeting on 'maintaining traffic congestion and signal during the World Cup'.

As Bangladesh prepares to play host to the World Cup, State Minister for Home Shamsul Haque Tuku urged main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to cancel the strike called for Feb 7 "considering the country's image ahead of the World Cup", said Star Online, website of The Daily Star.

The coveted World Cup trophy arrived here Wednesday after making a long and spectacular journey in Sri Lanka and India.

A report from Chittagong said the host team began their practice sessions under lights after receiving consent from the International Cricket Council.

Fondly called Tigers, they have started their practice sessions at the Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium to get acclimatised to the conditions.

The practice sessions will help the Tigers understand the behaviour of the pitch and outfield condition and the local cricket organisers will also get a chance to test the floodlights before the first practice match between Canada and Bangladesh Feb 12.

"Pitches also have been prepared at the Women's Sporting Complex ground and MA Aziz Stadium for the teams that are participating in the World Cup for extra practice by the cricketers," said Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director and Local Organising Committee (LOC) member secretary Dewan Shafiul Arefin Tutul.
