The fascination for the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup continues strong as we approach the knockout stages and unsurprisingly advertisers have followed with significant spending, which is expected to cross a 2,000 crore (including both on-ground and TV sponsorships) by the time the cup ends on April 2.
This time, too, major ad spends have come from sectors such as automobile, telecom , fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and TV. According to TAM, advertising volumes in the 2007 World Cup doubled compared with 2003 with auto companies, F&B and telecom giants contributing 50 percent of the spend of around 1,200 crore.
According to market estimates, onground sponsors this year?Reliance Communications , LG India, PepsiCo , Reebok India , Hero Honda, Fly Emirates , Hyundai India , Yahoo, Hyundai, Castrol India and Money Gram International?have together shelled out an 1,200 crore for in-stadium advertising. Sony India , Hero Honda and Vodafone have spent 55 crore each for rights of on-air joint presenting sponsors.
Media planner Anita Nayyar of the MPG Group says advertisers are vying with each other to gain maximum visibility in this world cup as they expect viewership to soar. Cricket matches attracted 176 million viewers in 2010, says TAM. This number is expected to almost double this year.

Cricket is very much in the air, with the ICC World Cup getting underway in Bangladesh. And, just as for seemingly everything in life, there is an app?correction, 'are apps'?for the gentleman's game as well, designed to keep you in touch with proceedings, even if you are nowhere near a cricket stadium or even a television set. Yes, there are good old SMS alerts too?which are being offered by a number of service providers?but what makes these apps stand out is the fact that all of them are available for free of cost, and require nothing more than a decent GPRS/EDGE connection.
What's more, if you are really missing the action, there are apps that will let you have a slog of your own or bowl a few wrong 'uns without moving from your seat.
We cherry-pick seven of the best apps that will let you get your cricketing fix, whether in terms of action or information - no TV or cricket ground needed.
ESPN Cricinfo
There is a saying in online cricket circles that "if it is not in Cricinfo, it is not cricket," such is the near encyclopedic information that Cricinfo serves up to its followers. By far the most popular cricket web site in the world, it too has revamped its cricket app for both Android and iOS, with now a special section added for the World Cup. In terms of sheer information about the game, it is difficult to get any better than this with news, statistics, audio and video clips, and even push notifications about your team being built into the app. Our favourite section is the ?magazine? which contains a number of excellent?often tongue-in-cheek?articles about the game. No, it is not going to stop us from visiting the site itself time and again, but if there is one cricket app you should have on your handset, this is it.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 - Official
This is the official app for the 2011 World Cup for iOS and Windows Phone 7 (alas, Indian users will not be able to get that version, unless they log in with a US ID), and while it is not the most attractive around (some player profiles do not have pictures of the players), it certainly delivers in terms of information. You have everything that you would need to keep tabs on the tournament from live match coverage together with text commentary, team statistics, team standings, video clippings and tournament photographs. What however is missing in this app is the news and features section, which is going to turn away a lot of purists who want a lot more than just live match coverage. We also could see no sign of any push notifications. Still, it is pretty zippy for those seeking to grab the latest score, stats and standings.

Yahoo! Cricket
Yahoo! Hosts the official cricket web site for the 2011 World Cup, but has opted to release a full-fledged Yahoo!Cricket app only for iOS, although there is a more limited Yahoo! Cricket Score app available for other phone users too. In terms of live match information, it is very much spot on, although it is not the fastest app in town by means. You get live coverage with text commentary (which for some reasonable is available only when you hold the phone in landscape mode), lots of pictures, and news aplenty. We however were a bit disappointed not to find statistics, records and team profiles, and are hoping that those will be added in an update. The Nokia phone version of the app is restricted just to ongoing match coverage and does not even have news. Truth be told, we expected a bit more from Yahoo!, but even in its current avatar, the app is handy for keeping track of the World Cup.

Prof Deano
Some cricket fans might wince at the sight of one of limited over crickets' legends being dressed up in a gown and scholar's cap and being made to prance in front of a blackboard, pretending to be scientific about the game. Others, however, just loveProfessor Deano (short for former Aussie ODI legend Dean Jones), with his weird statistics (there is a 13.2 per cent chance of rain interrupting the match) and forthright opinions. And all of these come to the fore in these iOS and Android apps, where he is as quirky as ever and never short of figures and decidedly eccentric logic. Will we be using this app to find out the latest score? Unlikely. But we bet we are going to be opening it several times a match just to find out what Professor Deano has to say about the proceedings and check his stats as much as we do the official ones.

Ultimate Cricket'11 World Cup Edition
Fed up of just hearing about cricket? Want to get out and have a swing or two yourself? Well, then this is just the app for you. Based on the World Cup , Ultimate Cricket'11 lets you bat and bowl to your heart's content on your Nokia S60, Symbian ^3 or BlackBerry handset. The graphics may not be cutting-edge, but the sheer choice of shots you can play more than compensates. We would also have preferred real player names (Tindulkar, Saywag and Gambeer, anyone?), but the fact that we are getting a very decent cricket game free does tend to make up for all the deliberate typos. It?s best to play it on a phone with buttons as our experiences on the touchscreen (Nokia N8) were a bit iffy.

Stick Cricket
Cricket is a batsman's game, the pundits tell us, and one day cricket is even more so. So what better way to get a taste of the action than picking up your willow and giving the white orb a jolly good thwack? Stick Cricket lets you do just that ? it is batting at its basic best, as seen on the immensely popular StickCricket.com website. You see the ball coming, swing your bat and hope you have got your timing spot on. There are real player names, including those of some legends, and while you can have a jolly good slog by yourself, you can also play against a friend by passing your handset to them for their innings. There is no bowling, no running between the wickets, no setting the fields, just hammering the ball to all parts of the ground. The sound effects are good, the graphics are decent and although it does not really appear to be as comprehensive as most of the other cricket games out there, the sheer simplicity sucks you in. Terrific for a good adrenaline rush. It is mainly available for iOS, although there is an older version of the game called Ian Botham Stick Cricket available for Java handsets too.

Cricket Wars
This app is like playing cricket in a multiplayer online role playing game universe. You pick an avatar and the guide the person right through all the way, taking on challenges from other players in the community, playing matches, picking up gear (there is a virtual money system in the game), and attempting to move up the community rankings and building your own team. There is no ?real? action as in you are not going to be asked to swing a bat or hurl a ball in anger at any stage ? just lots and lots of decisions, each of which could have an impact on your player and team. There is plenty of information going around to help you make up your mind, from weather conditions to details of current skill levels. And you can even share your progress on Facebook . Best of all ? the game actually never really ends, you can keep playing it in an endless mode, just like a classic online role playing game. Thoroughly recommended for those who prefer using their little grey cells rather than sheer brawn on the pitch!
The Delhi High Court has restrained around 144 cable operators across the country from telecasting the ongoing cricket World Cup, which they did by unauthorisedly accessing signals of ESPN Software India Pvt Ltd (ESIPL).
The court was hearing a suit filed by the company seeking an order to restrain cable operators from unauthorisedly broadcasting the tournament.
The ICC Cricket World Cup, being co-hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, is being telecast on ESPN, STAR Sports and STAR Cricket channels from Feb 19 to April 2.
Allowing ESIPL's plea against the unauthorised accessing of telecast signals by cable operators, Justice Gita Mittal said: "After this order, anyone showing the broadcast of ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 through any unauthorised means or any other channel will be held in contempt of court and liable for prosecution."
The court, in an order delivered Friday and made available Monday, asked all cable operators to file a status report within a week's time.
ESIPL in its suit claimed that the defendants, approximately 144 cable operators, are taking unauthorized connections and they are unauthorisedly accessing signals of the plaintiff without taking a licence from the company.
The court gave permission to ESIPL to take action against all other cable operators not party to the suit but unauthorisedly utilising the feed of ESPN, STAR Sports and STAR Cricket without licence.
The court said: "Restrained the 144 named cable operators from transmitting and/or telecasting in any manner whatsoever without licence from ESS (ESPN STAR Sports) the telecast of ICC Cricket World Cup 2011."
The cable operators have been restrained from telecasting or transmitting any other channel or in any other manner infringing the copyright or re-broadcast right of ESPN STAR Sports.
The court issued injunction against unnamed cable operators indulging in the illegal telecast and told police to render assistance to ESIPL to enforce the order.
International cricket returns to Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium after a gap of three long years on Sunday. The venue won't exactly be jam-packed with people but the sound of wood striking leather at this venue once again will be sweet for the city's cricket enthusiasts.
New Zealand and Canada will clash in a league match, the first to be hosted at Wankhede post renovation, on Sunday. The game will begin at 9.30 am IST and those who had started missing the city's cricketing epicentre will find that it's business as usual on 'D' road.
There might not be many takers for this game because of the teams involved and there aren't many tickets available for the paying public either. A lathi-charge can well be expected when the stadium hosts the grand final on April 2. But for now, one cannot help but spare a thought for Wankhede - a far more modern avatar of what was once a concrete jungle for a good 33 years.
In a way, the New Zealand-Canada match is a dress-rehearsal for bigger things to come at this venue in due course. Yet, political correctness demands that this World Cup match gets its share of importance. Technically, it is the first 'big' game Wankhede is hosting after the renovation and therefore the pitch, the outfield, stands, dressing rooms, corporate and media boxes - facilities per se - will create a fresh impression in the minds of those who arrive. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) will keep fingers crossed hoping that the effect is positive.
New Zealand's stand-in skipper Ross Taylor feels "the wicket is interesting." Just in case he's spoken to a few locals, he'll realise he's not off the mark. Former Mumbai captains Dilip Vengsarkar and Sudhir Naik also feel the same.
"It is looking very good," says Vengsarkar, one of Mumbai's most famous cricketing surnames. How good the wicket is, it's for New Zealand and Canada to show. Sunday's game will be a big indicator of what to expect when Wankhede hosts the final. The new stadium has four diagonal slits across the stands for air ventilation which could make the play early on interesting. The Wankhede wicket has always had that extra bounce which most venues across India find missing. The outfield will reveal itself only when the match begins and for the paying public, Sunday will be for reviews.
"There's no point talking about those controversies (which surrounded Wankhede until recently). Let's look at the positives. It's a world class venue," says an official.
On Sunday, the world will get its first chance to witness that class.
ICC Cricket World Cup 1996
A historic World Cup semi-final in Calcutta - which contained the good, the bad and the ugly. The good was Sri Lanka getting through to the final for the first time; the bad was that they did so by default; and the ugly was the riot that forced Clive Lloyd, the match referee, to abandon the game. When India crumbled to 120 for 8 - chasing 252 - the crowd set fire to areas of the stands and started to pelt the fielders with fruit and water bottles. But there's no doubt Sri Lanka deserved their place after another polished performance; the top three of Sanath Jayasuriya (1), Romesh Kaluwitharana (0) and Asanka Gurusinha (1) all failed, and astonishingly both openers were out caught at third man... in the first over. Aravinda de Silva played a breathtaking innings, stroking 66 off 47 balls with 14 fours, a warm-up for the match-winning century he would make in the final four days later.
ICC Cricket World Cup 1998
Catharsis for Mark Ramprakash, who finally made his first Test hundred, in Bridgetown today. It came in his 24th Test, almost seven years after his debut, and it was a lovely innings. England were in trouble at 53 for 4, but Ramprakash and Graham Thorpe - who made a workmanlike 103 - saw them to 403. From there they dominated, despite a couple of bludgeoning assaults from the recalled Philo Wallace, but rain allowed only 18 overs on the last day and the match was drawn.
ICC Cricket World Cup 1950
A West Indian allrounder is born. Trinidad's Bernard Julien had a bit of everything: flashing strokeplay; brilliant fielding; lively left-arm seamers from a strange, stiff-legged run; orthodox or unorthodox left-arm spin; and the ability to charm fans and females alike. He could play, but his career at the top was fitful, with only two centuries and one five-for in 24 Tests. His first hundred was a violent affair, at Lord's in 1973, when he added 231 for the seventh wicket with another handy allrounder, Garry Sobers. England were pummelled by an innings and 226 runs. Julien also played in the World Cup final of 1975, and represented Kent between 1970 and 1977.
ICC Cricket World Cup 2004
Even neutrals were breathless when the first ODI in Karachi on India's first tour to Pakistan for 15 years genuinely lived up to the hype. India actually slowed down but still monstered their way to 349. When Pakistan were 34 for 2 in the eighth over, the match looked settled. But Inzamam-ul-Haq (122) and Yousuf Youhana (73) led the fightback at nine an over. Moin Khan needed a six from the final ball but only managed a single. In the final analysis, Pakistan's 19 no-balls to India's two cost them the game.
ICC Cricket World Cup 1859
The 8th Earl of Darnley was born. The Honourable Ivo Francis Walter Bligh also happened to be a useful cricketer, who played four Tests for England, all in 1882-83, when he captained them to an Ashes victory. That was immediately after the famous 1882 series, in which England's defeat sparked the Ashes legend: a famous notice in the Sporting Times mourned the death of English cricket and said its body was to be cremated. Bligh eventually married one of the women who created the Ashes urn, and on his death in 1927 the urn was bequeathed to MCC.
ICC Cricket World Cup 1977
England were bowled out for 95 in 34.3 eight-ball overs on the second day of the Centenary Test in Melbourne, Dennis Lillee taking 6 for 26. When Australia, who had been bowled out for 138 on the first day, batted again, they did far better, and debutant David Hookes stole the headlines, cracking five fours off one over from Tony Greig on his way to 56.
ICC Cricket World Cup 1974
Glenn Turner became the first New Zealander to score two hundreds in a Test, and in the process set the team up for their first victory over Australia, in Christchurch. Turner was still there at the end, having anchored the chase of 228 with an unbeaten 115. In a low-scoring game, it was a remarkable effort - only one other New Zealander passed 26 in the match. This was only the sixth Test between the sides, Australia having shunned their neighbours after thumping them in two days in 1945-46.
ICC Cricket World Cup 1904
West Indies' first double-centurion is born. Opener Clifford Roach played in their first 16 Tests, and cracked a blistering five-hour 209 against England in Georgetown in 1929-30 to set them up for their first win. It was an odd series for Roach: in the previous match he had bagged a pair, and in the game before that, he had made his first Test century. At his best he was a glittering stroke-maker, second only to George Headley as West Indies' premier batsman. He died in his native Trinidad in 1988.
ICC Cricket World Cup 1956
Another fine day for New Zealand. Today they routed West Indies for 77 in Auckland, winning by 190 runs, their first Test victory after 45 Tests and 26 years of trying. It was sealed when Sammy Guillen - who had played five Tests for West Indies earlier in his career - stumped Alf Valentine off Harry Cave.
ICC Cricket World Cup 1959
Birth of the bespectacled Australian Dirk Wellham, perhaps the only man to make a hundred on Test debut and cost his side victory in the process. That was at The Oval in 1981, when Wellham's nervous passage to three figures delayed Australia's declaration and ultimately allowed England to get off with a draw. Wellham was bottled up by England's own debutant Paul Parker, who was brilliant in the covers or at midwicket, while Ian Botham generously encouraged him, saying, "Don't give it away now." Wellham, who was also the first person to captain three different Sheffield Shield states - New South Wales, Tasmania and Queensland - played five more Tests spread over five years, but never scored more than 36. Parker never played again, though.
ICC Cricket World Cup 1993
A second consecutive double-century for Vinod Kambli, against Zimbabwe in Delhi, took his average to a formidable 136 after four Tests. For good measure, he bashed two more centuries in his next three innings, and it's an amazing statistic that - despite a Test average of 54 - he played his last Test at the age of 23, in 1995-96. As for the match, Zimbabwe's first overseas, India won by an innings, but Andy Flower made 115 and 62 not out to start his love affair with Indian grounds.
ICC Cricket World Cup 1981
In Barbados, where he was born, Roland Butcher became the first black player to play for England. He made 17 (off 82 balls) and 2 (off 27), as England were thumped by 298 runs. Butcher played three Tests, all on this tour, with a top score of 32.
ICC Cricket World Cup 1985
Denesh Ramdin, born today, got picked in the national squad having played 13 first-class matches, for the tour to Sri Lanka in 2005. He impressed with his glovework and the bat on the tour to Australia later that year, and in 2006 he nearly saved the series against India in Kingston. But he was inconsistent with the bat and managed to keep his place in the side mainly because there was no one better. He finally hit his maiden Test century - 166 against England in Barbados - in March 2009. He continues to be West Indies' first-choice wicketkeeper in the five-day format.
Cricket fans can finally get their chance to buy World Cup semifinals and final tickets from Monday when they go on sale for the first time, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said.
"A certain amount of tickets will go on sale online with our official ticket agents Kyazoonga," the ICC spokesman said.
Although the knockout stages do not begin until March 23, there is likely to be a scramble for the semifinal (March 29 and 30) and the final (April 2) tickets after favourites India began their 2011 campaign with a resounding 87-run win over co-hosts Bangladesh.
Nearly 80 fans are vying for every seat available online for the April 2 final of the World Cup in Mumbai, head of the official ticket agency said on Friday.
There is a similar demand for semi-final matches and it would only grow further in the next couple of days before the ballot window is closed, KyaZoonga chief executive Neetu Bhatia said.
Dalmiya accuses ICC of double standards
"In terms of demand for tickets for semi-final and final, it's almost at 80:1 ratio and we are still counting," Bhatia told Reuters by telephone.
"The demand stands nearly 80 times of the tickets available. We are very excited about this. Sunday is the cut-off day and people are still going to apply for those tickets."
The organisers have already confirmed that of the 33,000 seats in Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, only 1000 would be available online.
In all, around 4000 tickets are available for the public, while the rest would be distributed among the International Cricket Council (ICC) and clubs affiliated to the Mumbai Cricket Association.
Last month, the ticket website crashed in 20 minutes when 10 million fans logged in seeking those 1000 tickets, prompting the organisers to organise a ballot system instead.
Sidhu's secret diary
"It's actually the first ever such ticket ballot to be held in this part of the world. We put it together quickly and swiftly when it was decided, along with ICC and BCCI (Indian cricket board), that we would go the ballot way," Bhatia said.
"It's the most equitable form of ticket distribution that's used for Wimbledon and Olympics. We are pretty proud of what we have accomplished by putting it together so quickly for an event like this."
After the ballot, successful applicants would have to make the payment and the tickets would start reaching them from the third week of this month, she added.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Saturday announced the process for the public sale of tickets for the World Cup semi-finals in Colombo and Mohali, on March 29 and 30 respectively, and the final to be held in Mumbai on April 2.
When the tickets were initially programmed to go on sale on February 21 the demand was so great that the website was overloaded.
ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said that the ballot will open on Monday.
"It was most unfortunate and no blame should be directed at Kyazoonga, the ICC's official ticketing partner, as no one could have anticipated that tens of millions people would be trying to access the site an hour before it went live. In truth Kyazoonga have been an innocent third party in all the issues we have had with ticketing," Lorgat said.
"In conjunction with the hosts, we have now agreed that a ballot system is the best means of releasing any available tickets for the semis and final. The high demand clearly proves the massive attraction of the World Cup and format of 50 overs cricket," he added.
In dismissing media perceptions about a letter addressed to ICC President Sharad Pawar, Lorgat added: "To help resolve our ticketing challenges we have also engaged the offices of ICC President Pawar to assist us as he has done with several other issues related to World Cup planning."
Lorgat also reflected on the fact that two contractors had been arrested in Sri Lanka for selling tickets on the black market.
"We will support and encourage the actions of Sri Lanka Cricket in having such persons arrested for black market selling. It must serve as a warning that we will not hesitate to take action against anyone who abuses the system and sells tickets illegally," Lorgat said.
The ballot process is as follows:
STEP ONE:
You may apply for the 'Ticket Public Ballot' from February 28 to March 6.
You need to fill in a the Public Ballot application form at http://cwc2011ballot.kyazoonga.com
A ticket limit of two tickets per applicant applies. Only one application per person.
STEP TWO:
You will receive a Ballot Confirmation Number once you complete and submit your application. No up-front payment is required at this stage.
STEP THREE:
Please read and follow the instructions carefully before completing the form. If you break any of the rules all tickets you may be offered will be cancelled.
All Ballot applications must be submitted no later than March 6.
STEP FOUR:
The draw will be made by computer on March 10 and successful applicants will be informed by e-mail on March 11. If you have not heard from Kyazoonga by March 12, please assume that your application was not successful in the ballot.
STEP FIVE:
Successful applicants will be able to pay for their tickets through Kyazoonga's secure payment processing website where they will be shown the transaction amount and asked to pay online using credit card/debit card/net-banking. If your transaction is not successful, your place in the draw will be offered to the next polled applicant from the draw.
STEP SIX:
Upon successful payment completion, you will receive a confirmation page and email. Please print the page and keep the e-mail. You will receive your tickets from the third week of March. (ANI)
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the process for the public sale of tickets for the cricket World Cup semi-finals and final.
The semi-finals will be held in Colombo and Mohali on Mar 29 and 30, respectively, while the final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Apr 2.
ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat announced in Bengaluru on Saturday that there will be a public ballot system similar to those used in the majority of global sporting events, according an ICC press release.
"The ballot will open on Monday, Feb 28. You may apply for the ICC CWC 2011 Ticket Public Ballot from Feb 28 to Mar 6, 2011," he said.
When the tickets were initially scheduled to go on sale on Feb 21, the demand was so high that it overloaded the website.

People, willing to view the semi-final and the final from the stadiums, will have to follow six steps to get tickets.
They will have to fill in an application form at http://cwc2011ballot.kyazoonga.com to apply for the draw.
Two tickets could be bought with one application, while only one application per person is allowed.
The draw will be made by computer on Mar 10 and the successful applicants will be informed through emails the following day.

England captain Andrew Strauss won the toss Wednesday and chose to bat first in his team's Group B World Cup match against Ireland.
Strauss leads a team showing just one change from that which forced a dramatic tie with India on Sunday, recalling Stuart Broad in place of Ajmal Shahzad after the paceman recovered from a stomach complaint that left him bedridden.
THE RUSH for getting tickets for the final match of the ongoing ICC cricket world cup 2011 ended on a sour note when the official ticket website crashed due to heavy traffic.
The sale of world cup tickets for the final match, which was to start at 19:30 GMT on Tuesday, February 22 did not go as scheduled as the website could not handle the amount of traffic trying to visit the site.
Due to the heavy rush of online traffic, servers could not handle the load and eventually crashed hours before the scheduled opening.
However, as per latest reports, it is being expected that tickets will now be available via a lottery system. In order to claim world cup tickets, the visitor will have to visit the website and record their names in an online ballot box on the tournament's official ticketing website. The lottery is will take place once the period for registration is complete.
The ICC world cup 2011 final will be held at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai, which has a strength of accommodating 33,000 spectators. During initial bookings, 4,000 cricket world cup tickets were made available for the public out of which 1,000 world cup tickets can be purchased online and the remaining 3,000 world cup tickets are reserved for people who queue up at the stadium box offices.
The rest of the world cup tickets have been distributed amongst the clubs associated with the Mumbai Cricket Association and the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The response of cricket lovers from the Tricity towards the first World Cup match to be played at the PCA Stadium continue to be lukewarm on the second day, with only 967 tickets being sold. The stadium has the capacity to host 27,000 spectators. Most of the tickets sold were of Rs 50 and 100. “As many as 328 people bought tickets for Rs 50, while 283 went for the ones for Rs 100. The figure includes the sale of tickets for the March 11 match between West Indies and Ireland,” said PCA spokesman Sushil Kapoor.
