ICC Cricket World Cup: 10,000 tickets up for sale

The World Cup fever may have taken a jolt in the City of Joy after the Eden Gardens fiasco, but the good news is tickets for the March 15 South Africa-Ireland tie have already arrived and around 10,000 tickets will be up for sale soon.

“We have received tickets for the South Africa-Ireland match… Around 25,000 would go to different category members, 10,000 to the ICC, around 5000 to school students and nearly 10,000 for the general public,” a Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) official said on Monday.

According to the official, security arrangements at the refurbished Eden Gardens will be assessed for the first time on February 17. “The police will come for inspection for the first time after the Eden renovation and they have specifically demanded all the 105 odd CCTV cameras be in working condition,” he said.

The ICC security team had requested a dedicated lane for players and match officials during the Cup. But the police have decided that multiple route options will be made available for players and match officials strictly under their surveillance. “During last IPL, Shah Rukh Khan was caught in a political rally... So, the police have devised this plan to ferry players from the airport to the hotel,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the two new Cup venues in Sri Lanka — Pallekele and Hambantota — are ready to host the matches, an ICC spokesman said on Monday.

[According to a late night agency report, tournament director Ratnakar Shetty has said that the ICC has formally cleared the Eden and the Wankhede for the World Cup.]

Pallekele was supposed to host a warm-up match which was later shifted to Colombo due to wet weather.

“As things stand, everything’s fine at Pallekele. We had some issues with the weather but it has improved significantly. Everything is on schedule,” the ICC spokesman said.
