BCCI to give students free tickets for World Cup

New Delhi: To ensure capacity crowd at the stadiums, the organising committee of the 2011 cricket World Cup has decided to distribute free tickets to school and college students.

Tournament director Ratnakar Shetty told reporters here Thursday that the organising committee is in talks with the sponsors and the host associations to work out how many tickets can be distributed among the students.

"We have decided to distribute free tickets among students. We have lots of sponsorship programmes through which we will be distributing the tickets. State associations will also have some quota for the students. We want the state associations to throw their gates open for the students," said Shetty.

jmrxlBdjijd Shetty, who is also the chief administrative officer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said that free tickets will be given to draw crowds, specially for the non-India matches.

"The real challenge is to bring in people for non-India games and one of the suggestions is to bring in school and college children," he said.

Shetty said that ICC officials have visited Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata to inspect the stadia, which have been renovated.

"All the three stadiums in Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata have undergone massive renovation. We have made sure that the stadiums have better spectator services, media facilities and proper set-up for the broadcaster," he said.

The official Intro Video for the Cricket World Cup 2011.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 will be hosted in India. This is the introduction presentation for the event. Enjoy!

ICC Cricket World audio show celebrates CWC 2011

On this week’s special edition of ICC Cricket World audio show, ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat reviews 2010 and previews 2011 while ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 Tournament Director Prof. Ratnakar Shetty, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan and former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardena look forward to ICC’s flagship event which starts in Mirpur, Dhaka, on 19 February.

Mr Lorgat, looking back at the year that has just finished, says: “Restructuring of the Future Tours Programme (FTP) was quite significant where we created the Test Championship model. This will add a lot of context and meaning to the bilateral cricket. “The anti-doping code was introduced and came into effect in 2010 while the Decision Review System (DRS) was also significant. We have seen how it is aiding the umpires in the current Ashes series. “There was a change of guard in the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) with Sir Ronnie Flannigan taking over from Lord Paul Condon. This year there was also a change of presidency when Sharad Pawar took over from David Morgan.”

Look ahead to 2011, Mr Lorgat says: “The single big objective is to deliver a world-class ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. That is our flagship event. It’s The Cup that Counts. “We will also like to finalise the new FTP League structure that we have got. We have got the new league rules to agree on. Hopefully during the year we can agree that the first World Test Championship can be held in 2013. It is still something which is a work in progress.” The show can be used in whole or part by radio stations that want cricket content, while the public can also download it straight from the ICC website at http://icc-cricket.yahoo.net/media_interactive_zone/podcast.php.

Prof. Shetty, giving an update on the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 preparations, says: “The Central Organising Committee (COC), which is headed by Mr Sharad Pawar, who is also ICC President, has taken several decisions in trying to make this event a memorable one and to ensure that the non-India, non-Sri Lanka and non-Bangladesh games also have good spectator attendance. “What we have also impressed upon the venues is to keep the ticket rates at the minimal and affordable so that people come to stadia, and to look after the spectators, media and players facilities. The emphasis has been not on the size of the stadia but at ensuring that the facilities are good at all the grounds.”

Shakib Al Hasan, talking about the fitness of fast bowler Mashrafe Mortaza and the players to watch out for from his side, says: “I had a chat with Mashrafe and he told me that he will be able to play after a month. It will take him four weeks to get back to the ground. I firmly believe he will be fit and that will be a great bonus for us.” The number-one ranked all-rounder on the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI all-rounders, adds: “Tamim Iqbal for the last one-and-a-half year has been terrific. Imrul Kayes has been the highest run-getter for Bangladesh last year. Mushfiqur Rahim is the other one who is improving and Abdur Razzak has been bowling really well.”

Jayawardena, who led his side to the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 in the West Indies, believes Sri Lanka will look to pace itself well during the tournament. “I don’t want to consider ourselves as favourites. We can be a force to be reckoned with. “We will just like to start slowly and concentrate on one game at a time. I know the conditions will help us, the crowd and home advantage and all that. But we can only control things on the field. We can just keep our focus on that. I think we have got a pretty good chance.” Apart from the above interviews, the show has the usual round up of cricketing news plus an update of the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for Test and ODI cricket. This week’s ICC Cricket World audio show runs for 25 minutes and has been put together by the ICC’s global broadcast partner ESPN STAR Sports.

S-E-L to compose ICC Cricket World Cup 2011's official theme song

The coming year 2011 promises to be a treat for all cricket lovers as the mother of all tournaments - The ICC Cricket World Cup- is scheduled to take place from Feb 19 to April 2nd. This time the World Cup is being hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The countdown to cricket's biggest tournament has already kicked off with just 50 days to go. When you talk about cricket, can Bollywood be far behind? Well, not really, and this time Bollywood would be making its presence felt through the musical trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The trio have composed the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011's official theme song.

sel1 The song is titled 'De Ghuma Ke' which in itself is a passionate expression that creatively captures the fierce sense of competition and the desire to win. The song has been composed in 3 different versions namely Hindi, Bangla and Sinhalese that will feature in the build-up to and during the tournament in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

For all of you who can't wait to hear this pulsating number, there's good news. The song will be released on December 31st via various radio networks in India and also on ESPN STAR Sports, ICC's global production and broadcast rights holder.

ICC World Cup 2011 gets insured for Rs 600 crore

Ahead of the cricket world cup this year in the Indian subcontinent, ESPN has taken insurance cover for the ICC World Cup 2011 for Rs 600 crore.

New India Assurance will provide insurance cover against terror and adverse weather. BCCI will take additional insurance cover for all 8 Indian venues. The World Cup begins on February 19.

The 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup will be the tenth Cricket World Cup, and will be hosted by three South Asian Test cricket playing countries; India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It will take place during the months of February and March 2011, with the first match being played on 19 February 2011.

original 29 matches out of 49 will be played in India including one quarterfinal, semi-final and final, 12 matches in Sri Lanka including one quarterfinal and semifinal and eight matches in Bangladesh including two quarterfinals.

The tournament begins in Mirpur, Dhaka, on 19 February with the much-anticipated opener between co-hosts Bangladesh and India.

Writing World Cup song was an emotional moment: Manoj Yadav

Lyricist Manoj Yadav, who has penned the popular ICC Cricket World Cup anthem De Ghuma Ke, says he initially struggled to write the lyrics for the song that is replete with fun Hindi phrases. His brief was that the song should strike a chord with the rural and urban cricket lover. Yadav was told that the song has to have a strong fun element. "I got a call from O&M (Ogilvy & Mather) that we need to make a song for the ICC World Cup and gave me the brief. The brief was that it should not sound like just another anthem, which is motivational and inspirational; it should have a fun element too," Yadav told IANS.

De Ghuma Ke has been composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and crooned by Shankar along with Divya Kumar for the world event that kickstarts Feb 19 and will be held in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. "I was told that a farmer should also like it and even a multiplex goer enjoy it. It was quite tricky for me initially because I didn't know what way to pick. It was challenging. Then I sat with Shankar and we came up with De Ghuma Ke," he added. It took Yadav two weeks to write the entire song, which is peppy and upbeat. He also revealed that Shankar was quite a guiding force when he was penning the lyrics. "In the beginning I was quite confused what to write. So I asked Shankar. He briefed me and his guidance was always there. He said, 'Forget that you're writing a song for cricket. Just write what you like and go beyond your imagination.' Luckily, what I wrote was liked by everyone," said Yadav, who has also written the Lux soap jingle for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.

He also said that working on the song was an emotional moment for him. "A writer lives for these opportunities and so is the case with me. First of all it's a World Cup song, secondly it's with Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, one of the top music directors, and third it's about cricket, which is my favourite game - what else does one want?" "I love playing cricket, used to play it a lot. I can't express how I felt when I got this song. Never thought I'll be chosen to write this. I'm thankful to god and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy that they considered me for this track. It's an emotional moment for me," he added.

De Ghuma Ke has commonly used Hindi terms like, aare paare (this way or that), guthi gutham (fisticuffs), juta hausla badla faisla (buck up and change the game) and jiyo khiladi wah re wah re. However, all was not easy for Yadav; while writing the song the fear of criticism always lurked. "As a writer you do wonder whether people will like it or not. This thought is always there, but when you make people hear it and they like it, then you get the positivity," he said.

"Yes, there was a fear of being criticised. The CWG (Commonwealth Games) song was so nice but people compared it to other songs of A.R. Rahman and criticised it. If it had been seen as a stand alone song I'm sure people would have liked it," he said referring to the CWG song Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto, which was panned. "So I do have that fear too, but I will still hope that people like my song and take it in its right spirit," he said.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) also named opening batsman Tamim Iqbal as vice-captain of the team, which will face India in Dhaka on its first match Feb 19.

'The board wishes the two leading lights of Bangladesh cricket a very successful New Year and hopes their partnership would inspire the team to greater heights,' a BCB statement said.

The name of the full squad will be announced shortly.

Bangladesh is co-hosting the tournament with India and Sri Lanka. It will host the inauguration of the tourney Feb 17 at Bangabandhu National Stadium beside eight matches in Dhaka and Chittagong.

Malik, Akmal doubtful for Pakistani World Cup squad

Karachi, Jan 2 (IANS) Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik and wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal have so far been unable to obtain a clean chit from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and remain doubtful to feature in the World Cup squad.

The duo has failed to provide convincing answers to queries by PCB's integrity committee, well-placed sources were quoted as saying in The News Sunday.

'There is information available to the integrity committee that Malik received 90,000 British pounds in one of his bank accounts,' said a source. 'When questioned by the integrity committee, Malik expressed complete ignorance about the amount which was transferred to his bank account in the UK,' he added, stressing that the committee told the all-rounder that he will have to explain from where and why such a big amount was transferred to his account.

Kamran, too, has been unable to explain certain transactions made to his bank account in Dubai.

Early next week, Pakistan's cricket chiefs will decide whether to clear the duo for national duty. Also awaiting a decision on the issue by the PCB is legspinner Danish Kaneria. But unlike Malik and Kamran, Kaneria won't really be able to make the cut the squad even if he is cleared to play for the country.

There are no formal charges against the three players but unofficially it's confirmed that all of them are match-fixing suspects and need to prove their innocence to obtain clearance for national duty.

The three players were summoned by the integrity committee at the PCB headquarters in Lahore Thursday and Friday but in spite of marathon meetings, the Board was unable to decide their case. A decision, however, is expected Tuesday when the national selectors will meet to decide Pakistan's preliminary World Cup squad and the One-day team for the series against New Zealand.

ICC CWC 2011 song composers explain the inspiration behind De Ghumaa Ke

With still more than a month to go, the catchy ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 song, De Ghumaa Ke, is already making a big impact in the sub-continent and beyond. On this week's edition of ICC Cricket World audio show, the composers of song, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, talk about the inspiration for their hit tune.

As popular and critically acclaimed music directors of Bollywood, the trio has created an upbeat song, with versions in Hindi, Bangla and Sinhalese that will feature widely in the build-up to and during the tournament that will run from 19 February-2 April 2011 in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka.

"We thought about what one should expect of an anthem, and we wanted to compose a song that appealed to every cross-section of society.

"The title De Ghumaa Ke (literally meaning 'Hit it Hard') is a term you use whether you're watching your own local team or Sachin Tendulkar hit a six. That's the whole idea, a fun song that will catch on and we hope it gets the crowds chanting and dancing in the stands throughout the ICC Cricket World Cup," they say.

Cricket fans flocked to the picturesque and world famous V and A Waterfront in Cape Town on Friday evening to celebrate 50 days to go before the start of the game's flagship event, the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. The tournament begins in Mirpur, Dhaka, on 19 February with the much-anticipated opener between co-hosts Bangladesh and India. Joining the many followers of the game in Cape Town were Western Cape Premier Helen Zille, ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat and South Africa and India captains, Graeme Smith and Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

This promotional film will be part of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 television marketing campaign that will go on air this month. The ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 trophy was later displayed at the function which concluded shortly after midnight with a spectacular fireworks display. The celebrations will continue today (Saturday) at the V and A Waterfront Shopping Centre with the fans having an opportunity to be photographed with The Cup that Counts.

Ms Zille, in her welcome address, said: "2010 will always be remembered as the year of a successful and exciting FIFA World Cup in South Africa. It is a fitting way to conclude 2010 by welcoming the ICC Cricket World Cup trophy to Cape Town." Mr Lorgat said he was delighted to see so much interest and excitement building up amongst the players and followers of the game. "With 50 days to go before cricket's flagship event starts, key players are starting to think and talk a lot more about the World Cup" "The players will soon start with their World Cup focus and preparation and the related anticipation across the world will escalate with each passing day."

With the three host nations busy with extensive preparation and recognizing that a few venues were behind schedule, Mr Lorgat urged everyone to continue with the hard work required to successfully stage a world-class event. "We must do our utmost to complete all the necessary work to deliver another memorable event," said Mr Lorgat. He also thanked the host countries and the ICC's commercial partners for their excellent work to date. South Africa captain Graeme Smith, whose side opens its campaign against two-time winner West Indies in New Delhi on 24 February, shared his excitement when he said: "I can't believe that the World Cup is only 50 days away! The spectacular way that 50 days to the World Cup was marked is a pointer to the magnitude of the event.

"As a unit, we are looking to make sure we head into the showpiece with the best preparation possible. "The five-match ODI series against India starting on 12 January will be our last chance to make sure we are fully prepared and we hope to bring home the silverware." India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said he can feel the World Cup buzz around him. "With just 50 days remaining before we launch our campaign to win the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, I can clearly feel and sense the tremendous excitement which is gripping the cricket fraternity," he said.

"It is not a surprise to me as it doesn't get any bigger than the World Cup. It is the ultimate dream of every cricketer to represent his country in this competition and win the glittering trophy at least once in his career. "Every one of us in the India dressing room wants to lift that cup, not only for ourselves, but also for the billions of fans supporting us around the globe. It will require a lot of hard work, self belief and also a positive approach which Team India is capable of displaying at the highest level."

Commenting on his side's preparations for the World Cup, Dhoni said: "I'm happy with our preparations so far as we have gelled well, we have backed each other all the way and have played some excellent cricket lately. But we are also aware that we need to peak at the right time and maintain a winning momentum as the competition will be tough and every team will enter the event fancying its chances.

"Each team and match will bring a fresh challenge and we will have to play to our potential every time we take the field." The charismatic India captain urged the spectators to play their part in making the event the most successful ever. He said: "I also take this opportunity to urge the India public and spectators to support the tournament and all the teams taking part in it. I would love to see every stadium packed to capacity even when we are not playing. "With billions of eyes following the World Cup on television, this would be another great opportunity for us to showcase our love and passion for this great sport. Let us all unite and make the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 in the subcontinent the best ever."

ICC Annual Award Nominations

The ICC’s prestigious sixth annual awards appear to have run into a controversy with several high-profile figures from South Africa criticizing the final selection process for not including even a single South African player. The ICC Awards ceremony is now in its sixth year and this year it will be held in Johannesburg to coincide with the ICC Champions Trophy. Previous ceremonies were held in London (2004), Sydney (2005), Mumbai (2006), Johannesburg (2007) and Dubai (2008).

Majola, the South Africas national cricket board chief executive questioned the credibility of the awards and said it appeared to him that the only way to get on the shortlist was to play the Ashes.

One can raise various questions on the selection. How Graham Onions featured in the Emerging player of the year list? Before being short listed, he has played hardly 5 or 10 tests and do not have nothing great like Parnell or Duminy in him. Same applies for Ryder. They had done nothing outside their home conditions. It seems that the countries which do not play cricket in the latter part of the year will be totally forgotten.

Selection Criteria:

An ICC spokesperson said that the awards nomination “is a completely independent process in which the ICC has no says whatsoever”. The long list of nominations for the individual awards was prepared by a five-member ICC panel headed by Clive Lloyd, the ICC’s cricket committee chairman, and including Anil Kumble, Mudassar Nazar, Bob Taylor and Stephen Fleming. This list was then sent to the ICC’s independent panel of 25 members (including two South Africans) for selection of four players for each category.

Nomination is based on the period between August 13, 2008 and August 24 2009, the ICC Awards 2009 take into account performances by players and officials in that period for the game. That period includes such high-profile events as the ICC World Twenty20 in England, the ICC Women’s World Cup in Australia and the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in South Africa, as well as several bilateral Test and ODI series. While the shortlist was announced, the category winners will be known only on awards night. The votes have already been collated by Ernst and Young, who acted as independent auditors.

Highlights of ICC Awards:

Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and opener Gautam Gambhir got twin nominations, while Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag were shortlisted for the ODI Player of the Year.

Gambhir, Dhoni, Mitchell Johnson and Andrew Strauss have been short-listed for the Sir Garfield Sobers trophy for Cricketer of the Year.

In addition, Gambhir, Johnson and Strauss were also short-listed for the Test Player of the Year alongside Sri Lanka’s Thilan Samaraweera. Dhoni is also in contention to retain the ODI Player of the Year award he won last year as he is short-listed in that category with team-mates Yuvraj and Sehwag as well as West Indies’ Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

This year’s awards include eight individual prizes and also feature the selection of the Test and ODI Teams of the Year and the award to the side that has adhered most to the Spirit of Cricket. The nominees for the Women’s Cricketer of the Year are last year’s winner England captain Charlotte Edwards along with team-mate Claire Taylor and Australia’s Shelley Nitschke. The Emerging Player of the Year nominees short-list features two Australians, Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle, as well as Jesse Ryder of New Zealand and England’s Graham Onions. The Umpire of the Year award was voted on by the captains and the match referees based on the umpires’ performance statistics.

Tendulkar and Kallis share number-one batting spot

India batsman Sachin Tendulkar and Jacques Kallis of South Africa have jointly claimed the coveted number-one position in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen after stellar performances in the Cape Town Test which finished on Thursday. Tendulkar, who scored 146 and 14 not out, has gained one place while Kallis has been rewarded with a jump of four places for his performances of 161 and 109 not out .that earned him the man of the series and match of the match awards, to leapfrog Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara. Both the batsmen now sit on 883 ratings points, just one ahead of Sangakkara.

Tendulkar, who won the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Cricketer of the Year Award 2010 at the LG ICC Awards in Bengaluru in October last year, last claimed the number-one spot on 14 October 2010 after his magnificent 214 and 53 not out against Australia also in Bengaluru. It is the 10th time that Tendulkar has claimed the number-one ranking which he first achieved in his 33rd Test in November 1994 against the West Indies in Mumbai. Kallis last surged to the top of the batting table in October 2005 after the Sydney Test against Australia while he first topped the chart after the Newlands Test against England in January 2005. He earned 77 ratings points from the series against India in which he scored 498 runs.

Tendulkar and Kallis Also charging up the batting table are left-handed openers Alastair Cook of England and Gautam Gambhir of India. Cook, who scored a match-winning 189 in Sydney, has vaulted eight places to fifth spot. Cook had entered the Ashes in 30th position on 628 ratings point and ended the series with a career-best rating of 803 – thanks to his series aggregate of 766 runs which earned him the man of the series award. Gambhir has broken into the top 20 and he now sits in 15th position after his scores of 93 and 64 have helped him jump seven places in the latest rankings which were released on Friday. England's Ian Bell and Matt Prior have also improved their rankings after hitting centuries in England's an innings and 83 runs victory in Sydney. Bell has moved up five places to 22nd position while Prior is now in 29th position after gaining six places.

In the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for Test bowlers, South Africa's Dale Steyn continues to lead the pack. He is now on 899 ratings points after earning two ratings points and will now have to wait until the next Test series against Australia in September-October before he takes a shot at the 900-point mark threshold. Bowlers making upward movements include James Anderson in third (up by one place), Ishant Sharma in 15th (up by one place), S.Sreesanth in 22nd (up by four places), Ben Hilfenhaus in 24th (up by two places), Shane Watson in 32nd (up by one place) and Tim Bresnan in 36th (up by five places). There is no change in the top five of the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for Test all-rounders with Kallis leading Daniel Vettori of New Zealand by a distance.
