ICC Cricket World Cup : Only 4000 tickets to be sold for World Cup final

Ratnakar Shetty, the World Cup's tournament director, has said that the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai will have all the necessary permissions in place before it hosts the group-stage game between New Zealand and Canada on March 13. The stadium recently failed a fire inspection, raising concerns that it may not be ready in time for the match. It is also scheduled to host the final on April 2.

"There will be no compromise of any requirements for any government body or agency," Shetty said at the unveiling of the renovated Wankhede stadium. "Every permission that is required will be obtained."

He explained that the fire department was concerned primarily with the newly built areas, specifically the basement under the north stand that will serve as the broadcaster's control room, and that the Mumbai Cricket Association was already in the process of fixing the problems. However, he refused to be drawn into the exact nature of the permissions required or whether any deadlines had been set to obtain them. ESPNcricinfo understands that the fire department is not scheduled to make a second inspection of the venue.

On the subject of tickets, Shetty said that the association is limited to offering only 4000 tickets for the final to the general public because it is contractually obligated to offer tickets to the ICC (8500), as well as its member clubs (roughly 20,000). The limited number of tickets was further exacerbated by the renovation, which reduced the capacity of the stadium from 38,000 to 33,000. One thousand tickets for the final will be available online at Kyazoonga from February 21 and the remaining 3000 tickets would be sold through the association.

When asked whether it was unfair that only 4000 tickets would be sold for a game as important as the World Cup final, Shetty said the members of the clubs are also part of the "public" and so he disagrees with that assertion, but at the same time he also pointed out that the association's hands are tied because it has to honour its contracts.

While the pitch is ready for play, Shetty was noncommittal on the subject of a practice match, saying only that there are plenty of "cricket experts on the committee" who are monitoring the pitch and that the curator has always managed to produce a good wicket. They are also monitoring the shadow created by the new roof that creeps across the pitch as the sun sets, but Shetty said it was "not an immediate problem".

ICC World Cup 2011: Ireland Vs. Zimbabwe – Warm Up Match – Update

Boyd Rankin and Trent Johnston bowled a superb opening spell for Ireland, taking three wickets in order to rattle Zimbabwe, in the warm-up match at Vidarbha Cricket Stadium, Nagpur.

Zimbabwe, who won the toss, elected to bat first on a flat deck. There decision backfired, as they stuttered to a grim 31-run total for the loss of three wickets in 14 overs.

However, Tatenda Taibu is still batting on 17 runs, while Craig Ervine has just arrived at the crease, scoring 3 runs. In the process, the pair has added 19 runs between them.

In the first hour the pitch had a bit of juice in it for the bowlers, and Irish seamers took complete advantage of an early morning start. The seam bowlers moved the new-ball around in order to trouble the batsmen and earn some valuable top-order wickets.

Rankin was too hot to handle, as he managed to extract extra bounce from a slow track. The tall fast bowler hit the deck hard and bowled on a short length. He used his height to good effect, as he consistently beat the bat of the openers, Charles Coventry, and, Brendon Taylor.

Nevertheless, Trent Johnston has been the pick of the bowlers of his team, registering brilliant figures of 2 for 9 in 5 incisive overs. Johnston consistently pitched his balls in the corridor of uncertainty. The right-arm bowler moved the in the air and seamed it off the track.

The rest of the bowlers kept things tight at one end. John Mooney gave only four 4 runs in his three overs.

Earlier, Zimbabwe got off to a poor start, as they lost their first wicket in the second over. Taylor was the first batsmen to leave the pitch, adding a run to his team’s total.  He was undone by a beautiful out-swinger from Johnston.

Meanwhile, Coventry also struggled to middle the ball and he only managed to score 5 runs off 16 deliveries. His downfall was brought about by Rankin with a length delivery. The delivery stood tall on the batsmen, and he poked at it, edging it through to the wicket keeper, where Gary Wilson took a clean catch.

Johnston was far from over, as he provided his team with another breakthrough, getting rid of Sean Williams with an away-going delivery, leaving the opposition wobbling at 12 for 3 in eight overs.

The ongoing partnership between Taibu and Ervine is of a crucial importance to Zimbabwe, as it will have an impact on their final score-line.

ICC Cricket World Cup: 10,000 tickets up for sale

The World Cup fever may have taken a jolt in the City of Joy after the Eden Gardens fiasco, but the good news is tickets for the March 15 South Africa-Ireland tie have already arrived and around 10,000 tickets will be up for sale soon.

“We have received tickets for the South Africa-Ireland match… Around 25,000 would go to different category members, 10,000 to the ICC, around 5000 to school students and nearly 10,000 for the general public,” a Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) official said on Monday.

According to the official, security arrangements at the refurbished Eden Gardens will be assessed for the first time on February 17. “The police will come for inspection for the first time after the Eden renovation and they have specifically demanded all the 105 odd CCTV cameras be in working condition,” he said.

The ICC security team had requested a dedicated lane for players and match officials during the Cup. But the police have decided that multiple route options will be made available for players and match officials strictly under their surveillance. “During last IPL, Shah Rukh Khan was caught in a political rally... So, the police have devised this plan to ferry players from the airport to the hotel,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the two new Cup venues in Sri Lanka — Pallekele and Hambantota — are ready to host the matches, an ICC spokesman said on Monday.

[According to a late night agency report, tournament director Ratnakar Shetty has said that the ICC has formally cleared the Eden and the Wankhede for the World Cup.]

Pallekele was supposed to host a warm-up match which was later shifted to Colombo due to wet weather.

“As things stand, everything’s fine at Pallekele. We had some issues with the weather but it has improved significantly. Everything is on schedule,” the ICC spokesman said.

Lafarge to ride on Dhoni for brand connect

Having roped in Indian cricket team skipper Mahender Singh Dhoni as its brand ambassador, Lafarge India, the Indian subsidiary of the French building materials major, is set to roll out a new advertising campaign for the ICC World Cup.

The company has allocated a budget of Rs 5 crore for the campaign.

The ad campaign, for which Lafarge has commissioned Ogilvy & Mather, will aim at building a brand connect for the Lafarge name. It will play on the theme that just as a captain leads a team of experts on the field to victory, so does a builder lead a team of experts (architects, planners, masons, painters) for the completion of a dream home.

“Quite like a team and its captain, a homebuilder also needs to have a clear strategy or plan in mind while building his home. Like a team has to have the right mix of batting, bowling and fielding talents, a homebuilder needs to make the right choice of materials for finish and durability,” Madhumita Basu, senior vice-president (marketing), Lafarge India, told Financial Chronicle.

According to Lafarge brand managers, cricketers in India enjoy mass popularity. At a time like the World Cup, end-users will be able to connect with the messaging strongly as Dhoni will be featured in the ads.

“The campaign will be introduced simultaneously in states like West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa. But eventually we will adopt a 360-degree marketing approach around it,” Basu said.

How does the company stand to gain from the campaign?

“It serves the dual purpose of building the brand and ensuring recall, which finally contributes to the top line. This is a brand building exercise and we see it as a key step in supporting our growth plan for our Concreto brand,” said Basu.

Cricket WC 2011: The Changing Game!

A glimpse into the ongoing ad campaigns and a bit of the commercial aspect of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011..
The ad campaigns are meant to strike a chord with the audience and the Pepsi ads are doing just that. First it was Mahi and his Helicopter shot and now KP and his ‘Alti Palti De Ghuma ke’ also known as the ‘Switch Hit’ all part of Pepsi’s World Cup strategy named ‘Change the Game’. The Pepsi ads with top players and their trademark shots are catching the eye. The most recent release of Billy Bowden’s ‘Tedi Ungal’ caught one in the back seat as it was a totally surprising move featuring a renowned ICC Umpire in it.

The idea of this innovative campaign is to present the players and their trade mark shots in a totally new manner that is sure to appeal to the larger youth segment.

The Campaign is conceptualized by Taproot India’s Agnello Dias and Santosh Padhi and directed by Prasoon Pandey of Corcoise Films.
Speaking about ‘Change the Game’, Indian Cricket Team Captain, MS Dhoni said, “Change the Game for me is not about what you achieve, but how you achieve it. It is about the confidence to take risks and the courage to take the road less traveled.  On field, it is about playing innovative shots or making game changing decisions at critical junctures of the play. Pepsi’s Change the Game campaign captures this thought in an exciting and innovative manner and I am sure Youngistaanis will strongly identify with it”. Source: bestmediainfo.com
This Entire Ad Campaign is comprised of Virender Sehwag and his upper cut, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Helicopter shot, Harbhajan Singh’s Doosra, Tillakaratne Dilshan’s Dilscoop, Kevin Pietersen’s Switch Hit, Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina’s aggressive on-field spirit. A few surprise elements such as Billy Bowden’s ‘Tedi Ungal’ are also a part of this Innovative Campaign.

One could be rest assured that once the tournament commences, many other interesting Ad campaigns will surely impress the audience and some may even be surprising. The Surprise element plays a crucial role and the Ad agencies will definitely be aware of this and hence try and make the most out of it. Over the years these ads have only gotten more and more innovative and in a way interactive. Moving on to the Official song of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011- ‘De Ghuma Ke’ composed by Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy which has been marketed by the very well known media house ‘Oglivy and Mather’.

The media coverage rights have been given to ESPN and Star Sports for a price of around US$ 2 Billion. The tournament would be broadcasted live in about 220 Countries. Source: Wikipedia

The winning team will go home with a whopping US$ 3 Million and the runner ups will be given a sum of US$ 1.5 Million. Haroon LorgatHaroon Lorgat says Sri Lanka's World Cup venues are "good to go". AFP PHOTO/BEN STANSALL.Just days ahead of the first match of the tournament, speaking to the Reuters news agency, Lorgat said that he no longer had concerns over any of the venues.
Despite stadiums in Sri Lanka not meeting initial ICC deadlines for completion of construction and renovations, all three were now ready, he said.
“We felt they [Eden Gardens - Kolkata] would not be ready by February 27 but they had every opportunity to be ready for the matches in March and we've got to the point now when all of the venues are going to be ready for the games scheduled,” Lorgat said.
Lorgat’s comments come a day ahead of a final report to be released by the ICC’s World Cup venue inspection team. The report will officially announce the status of the venues that have concerned the ICC.
All three of Sri Lanka's World Cup stadiums were still undergoing minor finishing touches, including the paving of a road leading up to the stadium in Pallekele, according to local media reports last week.
Co-hosts Sri Lanka will host eleven matches, including a quarter-final and a semi-final. The ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 gets underway with the opening ceremony on February 17 and the first match of the tournament on February 19.
