Cricket World Cup Betting - Canada v Sri Lanka

The last time that cricket's World Cup was played on the Indian sub-continent, Sri Lanka were the surprise winners. They open this year's campaign against a surprising Canada team.

Canada
The Canadians had to win a playoff against Afghanistan to reach this tournament, and many were disappointed that they did. Perennial attendees, they have never had a competitive side, hold the record for the lowest score made in the competition and have only ever had one player even approaching first class standard. All of this is set to change, though. In their warm-up game against England they were looking like the same old Canada until big-hitting Rizwan Cheema took charge, blasting 93 to bring them within an ace of victory. And if you think he can't do that again, remember that his one day international strike rate is higher than that of Pakistan's big gun (and this week's captain) Shahid Afridi.
Sri LankaSri Lanka
The co-hosts have a major selection problem – just who do they leave out for this game. Sri Lanka's top six seem to be settled, having all-rounder Angelo Mathews come in at seven gives them a big hitting option lower down the order and the fact that the next four men in should all be batting at eleven scarcely seems to bother them. In fact, the bowlers they leave out would walk into the first eleven of most of the sides in this tournament, including India's. The World Cup is the final hurrah for the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan and he will see this game as a chance to add another five wickets to his already unbeatable international haul.
Prediction
The big problem for Canada's chances are that that record low score of 36 came against these opponents. Two of the side – John Davison and Ashish Bagai (who actually led something of a revival after they lost six wickets for twelve) – played in that game. The Canadian psyche is such that they will want to avenge that humiliation and this is the first chance that they have had to do so. Although they will be good enough to give a number of other sides in their group – including New Zealand and Kenya, who play earlier – a run for their money, the Sri Lankans would be too strong for most Test nations, let alone one of the minnows.
Odds
There isn't much point betting on Sri Lanka – you will do well to find odds of less than 1/50 – but it is worth looking at bets on Canadian individuals. Bet365.com will give you 13/2 on Cheema being the top scoring batsman for Canada and 4/1 on him being the top bowler, either (or both) of which look good value indeed.

Cricket fans set for new innings on Web

The International Cricket Council's (ICC) Anti-Corruption and Security Unit might have barred players, team coaches, managers and match officials from mobile tweeting during World Cup matches, but there is no dearth of options for cricket enthusiasts to get live scores, commentary, news and videos on the Internet platform. Social networking sites, cricket portals and Internet fan sites are bringing ball-by-ball coverage in real time, to millions of netizens across the globe.

While Facebook (FB), through its multiple cricket groups and World Cup 'Fan Pages' get experts, fans, and followers of the game to discuss, debate, analyse every ball and upload match videos, micro-blogging site Twitter allows live tweets from commentators, spectators, TV audiences and other users. Twitter brings about an integration of the cell-phone and web platform, through its many mobile-tweeting applications, allowing users to seamlessly exchange information on the web through their mobile handsets. It is fast, immediate and highly effective, say social media experts.

On video sharing website YouTube, users can upload and share match videos and view highlights of the game. Besides, ICC World Cup 2011's official website in association with Yahoo! India — iccevents.yahoo.com — provides a one-stop online destination for proceedings of the Cup. Yahoo also hosts 'Commentweeter', which provides a single-page view of all Twitter updates on the event. Users can also shop through the site for ICC merchandise and official World Cup memorabilia.

ESPN, the official broadcaster of the tournament, is providing ball-by-ball action on the Web through its cricket portal Cricinfo. The site offers desktop widgets, which users can download, mobile applications for iPhone and Android handsets, a mobile site, a Facebook page and a Twitter handle through which live scores and stats can be obtained. Cricinfo's 'Fantasy Cricket League' lets you experience nail-biting moments of the Cup, and gives you an opportunity to compete and win prizes.

As cricket euphoria sweeps the nation, youth brands like Pizza Hut and Adidas have also cashed in on the cricket frenzy through innovative social media campaigns. Gaurav Hajela, social media consultant, Pathfyynder Solutions says, "Just as retail vies for footfalls, social media vies for clicks and hits. Providing live updates and trivia on your site is just an excuse to engage your prospective consumer."

In the last three months, Pizza Hut witnessed a 300% growth in its 'Pizza Hut Celebrations' page on FB, where users can print a voucher to avail a free meal in any Pizza Hut outlet, every time a batsman crosses 99 runs. Anup Jain, director — marketing, Pizza Hut India says, "Our FB page has crossed the 1- million mark and with our World Cup campaign, we look to establish ourselves as a youth brand on the web."

On the other hand, the 'adidascricket' fan page on FB has over 1.7 lakh fans and continues to grow. Tweets of Adidas brand ambassadors, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, are streamed and made visible on the page. It also contains interesting games, live updates, trivia and the first ever fantasy league on FB.

ICC World Cup 2011: Kiwis looking to turn the corner against kenya

New Zealand, semifinalists in two of the previous three World Cups, hope to at least replicate - if not better - those performances as they take on Kenya in their opening Group A fixture of the 2011 edition in Chennai on Sunday.

The Kiwis are expected to comfortably win more due to the dumps that Kenyan cricket is in rather than their own obvious all-round superiority.

New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori said his team will look to make a fresh start at the World Cup after a harrowing run in recent One-Day Internationals.

The Black Caps have lost 14 of their last 16 one-dayers, leading to doubts about their ability to lift their game in testing sub-continental conditions.

"I hope we can look at the World Cup as a fresh start. Our guys have the ability to bounce back. I prefer to look ahead rather than dwell on the past." Vettori said.

New Zealand comfortably defeated Kenya by 148 runs the only time they have played before, in the 2007 World Cup. In 2003, the Kiwis forfeited their World Cup match in Nairobi due to security concerns.

But New Zealand don't want to take the Kenyans lightly. "The hardest thing about playing a qualifier is that you do not see much of them. Some of their players will be a bit of a surprise. You prepare may be after seeing them on television. It adds its own challenge but that shouldn't matter. We have to turn up to play well and win," Vettori noted.

The Kiwis qualified for the penultimate round in 1999 and 2007 to underline their potential, but for all that, they have never looked a side capable of winning the Cup and it could be no different this time around.

Lack of consistency has been New Zealand's bugbear as their performance levels swing to the extremes. Yet, when the team clicks as one, the Kiwis have proven to be a handful, although these occasions have been rare and far in between.

Their top four batsmen in a reshuffled order - Brendon McCullum, Martin Guptil, Ross Taylor and Jesse Ryder - have not fired in unison which is worrisome for the Black Caps although all are eminently capable of tall scores.

In bowling, the Kiwis have a profusion of seamers. In many ways, the tournament holds immense significance to New Zealand who are expected to qualify for the knock-out rounds from Group A. The luck of draw has provided New Zealand with a projected "soft" opener against the Kenyans whose fortunes revolve around their two senior players, Stephen Tikolo (39) and Thomas Odoyo (32), both set to player their fifth World Cup while Seren Waters, a Durham University student, represents their future hope.

Kenya may be rank outsiders but captain Jimmy Kamande warned rival teams that they can notch up an upset or two as they had done in the past.

"In this tournament, top 14 countries in the world are competing and nobody should be taken lightly. The results will talk about our performance at the end of the day, Kamande said.

"We are going to play our brand of cricket that we know best. In all our matches, we are geared up to get good results. We are well organised and prepared. We will enjoy ourselves and not to copy any team," he added.

ICC World Cup 2011: Approaching milestones

Dhaka: Here are the milestones can be achieved during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.

# Sachin Tendulkar, with 97 hundreds in 622 games - 51 in Tests and 46 in ODIs - needs just three more during the forthcoming World Cup to complete a century of international hundreds.

# Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly have registered three hundreds each as captain in the World Cup. Ponting, in case of a hundred, would be the first to register four centuries as captain.

# Ponting is on the verge of becoming the first captain to aggregate 1,000 runs in the World Cup. His present tally is 954 runs at an average of 59.62 in nineteen innings (22 games). Apart from three hundreds, he has recorded five fifties. The next best aggregate as captain in the World Cup is held by New Zealand's Stephen Fleming - 882 (ave.36.75), including two hundreds and four fifties, in 27 matches.

# Tendulkar already holds a record for registering most fours (189) in the history of the World Cup. With eleven fours during the 2011 competition, he would be the first to reach a tally of 200 fours.

# Tendulkar, having played five successive World Cup tournaments between 1992 and 2007, would be emulating Javed Miandad's feat of appearing in six World Cup competitions in succession since the inaugural edition i.e. between 1975 to 1996.

# Tendulkar, with an aggregate of 1796 (ave.57.93), including four hundreds and 13 fifties, in 36 games, needs 204 runs to become the first batsman to amass 2,000 runs in the World Cup.

# Ricky Ponting is all set to establish a record for most appearances in the World Cup.  At present the record for most appearances is held jointly by Glenn McGrath and Ponting. Both have played 39 games each between 1996 and 2007.

# Jacques Kallis (923 at an average of 51.27 in 29 games) requires 77 runs to become the second South African to complete 1,000 runs in the World Cup - a feat achieved only by Herschelle Gibbs - 1067 (ave.56.15) in 25 matches.

# Australia have played 29 consecutive games between May 27, 1999 and April 28, 2007 without losing - a record at the World Cup. In case of just one win in the 2011 edition, Australia would be the first team to play 30 successive games without losing. No other team has even played ten games  in succession without losing. Australia's said tally includes 22 games  in succession won by them between June 20, 1999 and April 28, 2007. (West Indies have the next best record - 9 wins between June 7, 1975 and June 23, 1979 under Clive Lloyd's captaincy.

# Shivnarine Chanderpaul (856 at an average of 40.76 in 26 matches) is likely to become the third West Indian to complete 1,000 runs in the World Cup.  Brian Lara holds a West Indian record with 1225 runs at an average of 42.24, including two centuries and seven fifties, in 34 matches. Vivian Richards had aggregated 1013 at an average of 63.31 in 23 matches, including three centuries and five fifties.

# Muttiah Muralitharan (53 wickets at 19.69 runs apiece in 31 matches) has an opportunity to overtake Glenn McGrath's tally of 71 wickets (ave.18.19) in 39 matches and to establish a record in the World Cup.

# Ponting, the only captain to enjoy a cent per cent record, having won all the 22 world cup games, is likely to overtake Stephen Fleming's tally of 27 matches as captain.

# Tendulkar's seventeen fifty-plus innings - four centuries and thirteen fifties - in 36 matches is a record in the World Cup. In case of just three fifty-plus innings, he would be the first to register twenty fifty or more innings in the World Cup.

Cricket World Cup Live: Kohli slams fifty after Sehwag's ton

NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli hit his 13th half-century after Virender Sehwag's 14th century as India dominated the proceedings against Bangladesh in the 2011 World Cup opener at the Shere Bangla stadium.

ICC Cricket World Cup Live Scorecard

Kohli reached the milestone off 46 deliveries with the help of five fours.

Sehwag slammed nine fours and a big six in his 94-ball century.

Bangladesh spinner Mahmudullah clean bowled Gautam Gambhir (39) in the 24th over to break the dangerous looking second wicket partnership.

Sehwag and Gambhir continued India charge after losing Sachin Tendulkar to a freak run out and added 83-run partnership for the second wicket.

Gambhir slammed three fours in his 39-ball innings in the match.

Sehwag completed his 37th one-day fifty with a big six as he raced to half-century in just 45 balls.

A horrible mix-up with Sehwag ended Tendulkar's (28) stay on crease. Sachin was run out by Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan in the eleventh over. The master blaster hit four boundaries in his 29-ball innings.

Put in to bat first, India openers added run-a-ball 69 runs partnership at Shere Bangla National stadium.

The dashing openers took India's score to 50 in just 8.5 overs, when Tendulkar slammed his fourth boundary of the innings.

Earlier, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and decided to field against co-hosts India in the tournament-opener on Saturday.

Dhoni and his men are eager to settle the score after Bangladesh stunned them in 2007 and kick start their campaign on a positive note at the Shere Bangla National stadium.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, have so far been content with an odd upset and have been generally looked upon as underachievers but the tigers look to shrug off that tag when they lock horns with India at home.

Though they have just five victories from 20 World Cup matches to show, Bangladesh has the distinction of beating Pakistan on debut during the 1999 edition and ousting India and defeating South Africa four years ago.

Teams:

India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt/wk), Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel, S Sreesanth.

Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan (C), Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Junaid Siddique, Raqibul Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Naeem Islam, Mahmudullah, Abdur Razzak, Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam.

Umpires: Steve Davis (AUS) and Kumar Dharmasena (SRI)
TV umpire: Billy Doctrove (WIS)
Match referee: Ranjan Madugalle (SRI)

Pitch conditions: A hard wicket that is expected to help the slow bowlers in the later stages of the game. The team bowling second could find the ball difficult to grip if late evening dew arrives as predicted.

ICC Cricket World Cup Latest Update:

World Cup 2011: India vs Bangladesh

With an aim to payback the last World Cup's humiliating defeat, India (Ind) takes on Bangladesh (BAN) in the opening match of ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 at Shere Bangla Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday.

Bangladesh won the toss and decided to put India to bat.

Virender Shawag and Sachin Tendulkar started as opening batsmen.

India is batting at 129 at the loss on one wicket at the end of 20th over.

Sachin Tendulkar was run out at 28.

Gautam Gambhir had come in place of Sachin.

Gambhir was sent packing by the spinner Mehmadullah at 39.

Virat Kohli is the next batsman from India.

India is meanwhile, playing at 160 for two at the end of 24th over.

Dhoni-led Team India will try to start the World Cup campaign on winning note against Bangladesh.

However, cricket pundits think of it as a cakewalk for India but Dhoni & Co. must keep in mind that Bangladesh had defeated ‘Men in Blue’ by five wickets at the 2007 World Cup at Port of Spain.

Bangladesh have played Good home series before the World Cup. They thrashed New Zeraland and Zimbabwe in the ODI series. Bangladesh will have an advantage of playing under the home condition.

On the other hand, India is the 2nd ranked team in the ICC ODI rankings and team is performing better under pressure situation.

After winning both the Warm-up games, the morale of Team India is at its peak but it will have to keep the nerve in particular game.

Middle order was big trouble for India but in the final warm-up game against New Zealand, middle order shown sign of returning in form. Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina and skipper MS Dhoni played good knock and scored freely.

Though there is a tough fight between Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina for the place in the playing XI.

Chances of Yuvraj singh are very bright as he is the only left-arm spinner in the side. But he is off colour with the bat. He scored just one run against Australia in the first warm-up game. Nevertheless, he was very effective with the ball in both games. In such circumstances, Raina will have to sit out and pave the way for Yuvraj Singh despite of scoring quickfire fifty in the final warm-up game.

If Yuvraj gets a berth in the final XI, he will have to play at No.6 or7 as Dhoni has indicated that he will play up in the order.

It will be interesting to see, India will play with two spinners and two seamers or not. The track is expected to be slower one and it will help spinners as game progresses. In this condition, Piyush Chawla is expected to support Harbhajan Singh in the spin department. It is obvious that India will play with four regular bowlers and rest of the overs will be completed by part-timers like Yuvraj Singh and Yusuf Pathan.

Most probably India’s playing XI will look like: Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh/Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni, Yusuf Pathan, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel/ Ashish Nehra, Harbhajan Singh, Piyush Chawla/ R Ashwin.

As far as Bangladesh is concerned, the made tremendous progress after the 2007 World Cup. They won three matches out of nine matches in the Caribbean World Cup. In the last four years Bangladesh has won 38 matches out of 88 and their winning percentage is 34.09.

Bangladesh is one of the youngest sides and it has average age of 25. In one word, a good encounter is expected when both the Asian countries will lock horn in a day/night encounter on February 19.

Pitch report:

Toss will once again play crucial role at Shere Bangla Stadium. It is expected that track will go slow in the second half. The team should bat first after winning the toss.

Statistics:

Overall, India and Bangladesh have played 23 ODIs. India managed to win 20 times while locals have tested the victory just twice, including famous victory in the 2007 World Cup while one match was abandoned. The winning percentage of India and Bangladesh are 90.9% and 9.09% respectively.

Players to watch:

India: Sehwag, Tendulkar, Kohli, Dhoni and Zaheer
Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal, Shakib-al-Hassan, Abdur Razzak.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2011: Psychological Determinants Of Performance

iSporter and Sports Psychologist Dr. Chaitanya Sridhar tries to explain the psychological requirements from a team to win the 2011 Cricket World Cup.

icccwc

As the World Cup (WC) fire catches on, speculation of India's chance is one of the most debated topics. What surprises me is the expectation placed on the team at every cricketing event no matter how the team has been performing. No wonder the Indian cricket fan is often called 'Schizophrenic' displaying a constant love-hate relationship with their demi-Gods!

The aim of this article is to highlight the major psychological determinants crucial for performance as 'Psychological Edge' is mantra in today's sporting world! Nevertheless, I'd like to ascertain that peak performance is a combination of physical and mental skills.

The idea for this article sprung mainly from the obsessive attention on Sachin and what might be his last WC. Guess, I might be hurting popular sentiment here but one needs to be honest while writing an article! With all respect to the great player and to all his fans, this attention is unwarranted. From a professional view point, this would be adding a lot more pressure on the master-batsmen! Personally, I feel it is unfair to be neglecting the rest of the team- especially since we are talking of Cricket which happens to be a team game.

indiacwcteam

teamsachin

So, what essentially are the main psychological determinants of performance? According to the Arousal Theory, performance is at its best when anxiety levels are in the middle or at the optimum level. The tremendous pressure we place on our team to win obviously shoots up the anxiety level of the team. Of course one can argue that the players are paid so well and they ought to manage anxiety at the elite level. Each player has his or her strategy to deal with pressure but we need to remember that it may not be possible at every juncture. The least we can do is not to add to the existing anxiety and pressure!

One glance at the newspaper or any website and we can see the dissection of the team, and numerous experts giving suggestions. Albeit, many may be helpful but the question to be asked is - whether it is the right time to be providing advice? Information over-load is not what a player seeks at this juncture.

In fact, it is very essential to learn to 'switch-on and switch-off' from the game which would be difficult for Indian players while playing in India as everyone talks, eats and breathes cricket. A player performs to his best when he is in his 'Zone' or 'Flowing' when he is in his Ideal Zone. What works for one player may not work for another- for example, Aggression may be good for players like Sreesanth and Harbhajan but may not suit a calmer player. It is possible to be in the Zone when there is less chatter of the conscious mind and hence it is more in sync with the sub-conscious mind. This is in turn means that mind needs to be rested while not playing ('switch-off').

Focusing attention on something entirely different such as 'Golf' or 'Beach Volleyball' would help cricketers. This 'switching off' is especially needed after a bad loss or game because we tend to remember things that have happened 'most recently'. This is one of the reasons why players get into a slump after one or two bad matches and why it is difficult to get out of one. The mind should constantly be fed with 'good memories or best performances' as what we think is what happens (Imagery)! Moreover, this could explain why many a times the team has 'bounced back' when they were written off. 'Give it the best' attitude can do wonders to the state of mind and the game.

indianfansThe other thing is the more we see images of the 'Cup' and India winning, public begin to expect it to happen. It's all great if India performs well but then when they don't, there is a discrepancy between what was expected (from fans) and the outcome. This explains the extreme irritation, disillusion and angst displayed on the team. This process of persuading or influencing indirectly is what is called subliminal persuasion. We have seen innumerable instances of different forms of targeting players when they have under performed. They range from verbal volleys, burning player effigies and even vandalization of player's houses. Even Sachin's effigy was not spared. I hope readers are following what I'm trying to get at!   In addition, too much emphasis on winning puts tremendous pressure on players as well.

Sports Research has revealed focusing on performance goals yield better results than focusing on outcome alone. E.g., run a ball approach than thinking of total score of 320. It goes without saying that 'managing nerves' is essential for focus - especially with all the noise in the sub-continent stadiums. All said and done, it's not the team with the best players that always wins but the team that can work together that wins. In this regard communication is vital especially between the Coach, Captain and teammates. Staying together is best assured when there is fun and players enjoy each others company. Senior players, who are more adept at dealing with stress and pressure, might be able to guide the younger ones to stay calm and perform to their potential.

teamindiachanges

When the Team is a united cohesive unit, players do not seek support networks outside (which is rarely available while traveling). The Coach, Senior or Teammate may be the best counselor- a reassuring word or a pat on the shoulder can do wonders. This interaction and support also helps in 'venting-out' through proper channels, as 'pent-up' frustration is sure to 'leak-out' at inappropriate junctures causing much distress to the player and probably the team.

So, the next time we see the team trying to socialize a little or letting lose a little after a bad game, let's not make a big deal of it- they need to go 'all out' in the next game. Performance of any form requires focus, belief to succeed a clear mind and also enjoy what they are doing!

May the best playing team win! Chak De India!

ICC Cricket World Cup: Confident Brett Lee defends pace-dominated Oz attack for World Cup

Australian pace spearhead Brett Lee emphases that their fast bowlers will be effective even on spin-friendly pitches of Indian Subcontinent during the cricket World Cup, beginning on Saturday in Bangladesh.

The defending champion team is stacked with fast bowlers with just only one frontline spinner in form of Jason Krejza, but Lee does not see a problem in adjusting to the alien conditions.

"I really don't see any problem with the pace attack that we have got, we are playing on these low and slow wickets, because at the end of the day its 150 km/h (kilometers per hour) through the air," said Lee after practice session in Ahmedabad.

The bowler said they were trying to create an environment, where each bowler backs each other in the team.

"Well pitches are massive part of the equation but if you are going to go like Shaun Tait bowling around 160 km/h (kilometers per hour) at the batsmen's toes it doesn't matter whether you are playing at Waca (Perth) or playing here in India," he said.

"It will still hit the batsman at his toes on full. What we are trying to do is to bowl in team environment. We have to back the other guys and with our spinners I think we have got very good attack," added Lee.

The Kangaroos are placed in Group A in the ICC World Cup with Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Canada and Kenya.

Australia begins its World Cup campaign against Zimbabwe at the Motera Stadium on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on February 21. They sweat it out at the Motera Stadium during their practice sessions.

Lee further said that he is confident that he can make the ball talk at the start and the end of the innings when Australia play their World Cup opener against Zimbabwe.

Lee also played down any concerns that the defending champions had lost their momentum after losing by 38 runs and seven wickets to India and South Africa.

"We have taken a lot out of these two practice matches which will put us in good stead for the first game on Monday," he said. (ANI)

Cricket World Cup final venue fails fire inspection

Wankhede Stadium, venue for the Cricket World Cup final on April 2, has not met fire safety standards, the chief fire officer for Mumbai said on Friday.

"We will soon write a letter to the MCA [Mumbai Cricket Association] stating there is a need to comply with fire safety norms at the stadium. Once they abide by the terms we would again conduct an inspection," chief fire officer Uday Tatkare was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India (PTI).

"The team has found that the newly renovated stadium has many loopholes in its fire safety mechanism. The stadium must be in compliance with the fire safety conditions," Tatkare said.

The stadium also failed an inspection by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in December but earlier this week was given the go-ahead for its three World Cup matches starting on March 13.

"Among the mandatory fire apparatus are ... water hydrants, internal riser system for the stands, no-smoking indicators, fire alarms and extinguishers have to be installed," a Mumbai fire officer told PTI on condition of anonymity.

"There are some lapses which they need to look into."

The MCA, responsible for the stadium, was confident it could comfortably meet the fire brigade's demands.

"The fire brigade officials had come for a visit few days back and they had suggested a few safety norms after their visit," Association secretary Lalchand Rajput told Reuters on Friday.

"We are working on those and we will be ready. There is absolutely no worry. There has been no formal letter from the fire department yet."

The ICC's tournament director Ratnakar Shetty told Reuters: "I am not aware of this. I am not in Mumbai."

Ed Joyce's Cricket World Cup Diary

This morning we landed in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, and with the start of the World Cup just a few days away the excitement is really starting to build amongst the squad.
Having been out to India several times in my career on training camps and with various county and representative sides, I've had a taste of the Indian people's love of the game but if anything, the Bangladeshi's revere the game even more.
The government and people here are extremely proud that they're co-hosting this World Cup and that the opening ceremony is taking place in Dhaka and the welcome we've received has been almost presidential! They even went to the incredible length of clearing the roads of traffic for the various team buses to make their way from the airport to the hotel. The roads here are notorious for traffic jams so this measure turned what is usually a nightmare hour and a half journey into a pleasant 20 minute drive. This, and all the manic waving from people on the streets, shows just how important cricket is in this part of the world.
Our time here in Dhaka is actually the fourth leg of a journey that began on the 28th January in freezing Dublin. The first part of the trip was spent in Dubai where, thanks largely to the generosity of our main sponsors RSA, we were able to spend a couple of weeks training at the ICC's High Performance Centre.
Among the high tech gizmo's designed to make indoor net practise more realistic was a machine called Pro-Batter. It was developed for baseball and has now been adapted for cricket as well. Basically, it involves a projector beaming a recorded video of a specific bowler on to a white screen. You actually see the bowler running in and at the point of delivery, the ball is propelled out a hole by a machine behind it exactly where the bowler's hand is. It was great fun to play around with facing different deliveries from various bowlers and it is comfortably the best batting tool I've ever used. Hopefully the way the boys were whacking around Tim Bresnan and Mitchell Johnson on Pro-Batter can be replicated in the actual tournament but something tells me it won't be as easy as that!
As well as training in Dubai, we also played a couple of practise matches against Zimbabwe and Kenya who were also using the facilities out there. Unfortunately we lost both of these games but there were some encouraging performances most notably in the Zim game from our captain William Porterfield who made a breezy 66 and over the two games from Alex Cusack, Nigel Jones and Andre Botha who all took a few wickets and bowled tidily.
It was also nice to get a few runs in both games myself as I'm obviously desperate to do well after coming into such a successful side after a long absence. We weren't too down-hearted after these losses however as they were our first competitive games in several months and we knew we had so much more in the tank.
So we moved from Dubai on to Nagpur right in the centre of India which was to be our base for a week or so, and also the venue for our final two warm-up games. We knew that the most important thing from here on in was to make sure we peak going into that first game against Bangladesh on the 25th.
With this in mind it was vital that we continue trying to improve our batting against spin, an area Bangladesh are extremely strong in, and fine tune the rest of our game so that we could put in some better performances against New Zealand and Zimbabwe for the second time on the trip.
As it turned out, we really should have won both games instead of just the one against Zim. Although New Zealand made 311, the wicket was exceptionally good and we were very confident of getting close. Mid innings, our coach Phil Simmons reminded us that 50 overs is a long time and that we didn't have to go all guns blazing at the start. Stirling and Porterfield clearly weren't listening and both proceeded to flay the ball to all parts and after 10 overs, we were 80 for 0!
This is the first time I've seen Stirlo in full swing and by the looks of things, Ireland has a gem of a player for the foreseeable future. One straight six off Kyle Mills in particular will live long in the memory. After our rollicking start, the middle order all got going without making a really telling contribution and this explains why we ended up 32 runs short of our target at the end. But this was a much improved performance against a very good New Zealand side and we could look forward to our game against Zimbabwe knowing that with a few tweaks, a win was just around the corner.
Trent Johnston and Boyd Rankin gave us the perfect start to that final warm-up game reducing Zimbabwe to 12 for three at one stage and although Elton Chigumbura made an excellent century to bring them up to 244, we certainly would have taken that total at the start of the day.
Our successful chase was especially pleasing because of the three of the lads who hadn't been in the runs so far on the tour; Kevin O'Brien, Alex Cusack and Andre Botha, got going and won the game for us. This means that virtually everyone in the squad has had at least one good performance with either bat or ball going into the competition proper which is certainly a nice situation to be in.
And so to that first game here in Dhaka in eight days time. There's no doubting we'll be underdogs for it, as we will for most of our games out here, and the last time we played Bangladesh away they beat us 3-0. But they are a side Ireland has had a lot of success against in the recent past.
The most notable of those victories was in the Super 8's stage of the last 50-over World Cup in the Caribbean in 2007 but there have also been wins in the 20-over World Cup in 2009 in England, and in 2010 back home in Belfast that all suggest that we can certainly beat them again this time if we get our performance right on the day.
And while all is not lost if we don't get off to a winning start, a win would certainly give us great momentum and hopefully provide us with a springboard to recreate the atmosphere and support that the Ireland cricket team received four years ago.

Punter bets $132,300 on Indian World Cup triumph

An anonymous gambler has struck an 82,000 pounds ($132,300) bet with a London bookmaker on India winning the Cricket World Cup, one of the biggest ever laid in the one-day game. If the co-hosts and 3-1 favourites triumph in the April 2 final in Mumbai, the punter will collect 246,000 pounds ($396,9
00), Ladbrokes said.

"It's one of the biggest bets we've ever laid in the one day format and we've even more reason now to fear an India win," said a spokesman for the company.

The tournament starts on Saturday when India, who lost in the first round four years ago in the Caribbean, play Bangladesh in Dhaka.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2011: The CIOs-Employees Productivity Match Begins

It’s the time of the year when a large majority of employees will fall sick. And it isn’t malaria or the flu that is to blame. The sojourn of the Men in Blue, which starts tomorrow with the kick-off of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 at Bangladesh, is about to set many hearts racing and have as many employees not turning up at office.

At a time like this, when even the managers are itching to get back home to catch a glimpse of that match defining catch, maintaining productivity becomes a cause for concern. So, with the cricket fever set to run high amongst the employees, some CIOs have decided to tackle the issue head-on.

“We have blocked all websites that post live scores or offer live video streaming of the matches and other news channels. Unlike football, cricket matches continue for many hours and happen during office hours, and has serious bearing on employee productivity,” says Sanjay Chowdhry, Country Head-IT, General Cables.

This might be the traditional approach but there are CIOs out there who believe that controlling employees is not a good idea. Taking a more lenient approach Haresh Mandhayan, VP-IT, ING Investment Management India says, “We haven’t blocked any sites. Every employee knows his responsibility- if he is capable of enjoying cricket during work hours and yet do his work on time, we do not object.”

In order to avoid absenteeism and ease the strain on the networks, which is seen to peak especially during tournaments like the World Cup and the IPL, providing the employees a platform to stay updated with the game might just be the right tactic to keep them productive. “To counter the strain on bandwidth, we have introduced live score updates on our intranet, so that employees do not have to log on to the web to check scores,” says Amarendra Kumar Singh, VP-IT, Comviva. “We have also put up TV sets in the cafeteria where employees can go and watch the important moments of the match,” he adds.

Satyajit Sarker, AGM-IT, DTDC Couriers believes in having checks and balances along with the permissions. “We will be exercising a controlled democracy in terms of allowing the employees to get cricket scores,” he says. They will block the access to the websites providing cricket scores and live streaming and would instead send an internal mailer every half hour with a score update. “We have also placed a TV in the lobby which is under admin surveillance. So while people can go there and check the live scores, they will also know that they are being watched,” he adds.

So, while the employees would be ready with their plans of action for this World Cup; are you prepared with an approach to keep them happy at their desks?

ICC Cricket World Cup 2011: The Men Who Mattered

From the iSport Cricket Pavilion: iSporter Aditya Vaidyanathan pen a piece on the Men who made a difference to the World Cup. Do not miss this one!
 world_cup_logos
Change they say is the only constant! Its no different in Cricket than it is elsewhere. Legends must retire for new legends to be born. Most successful international players dream of a World Cup swansong. Some are fortunate to hang their boots with a successful World Cup campaign and some leave after a disappointing first round exits like Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Inzamam Ul Haq after the 2007 World Cup. This tournament will see some of the modern day legends of the game playing their last World Cup. Each of these players have played a major role in their team's progress over the last ten years. They have mentored newcomers
Ricky Ponting
rickyponting
Who would have expected the diminutive middle order batsman to go on to be a part of three wWorld Cup winning teams and lead Australia to wins in two of them. A batsman par excellence and a never say die captain. Ricky is the second highest century maker in ODIs and tests next only to Tendulkar. He was made the ODI captain in 2002 and lead Australia to an undefeated World Cup win in 2003. He played a major part in the win as he demolished the Indian bowling in the finals along with Damien Martyn. He scored a masterful 140* which remains one of the best knocks to have been played in a WC final. He lost most of his important personnel after the 2007 WC. He has had to rebuild the team and that has been no mean an achievement. He remains the lynchpin of the Aussie batting line up and will play a crucial role if Australia were to defend the Cup successfully. Veteran of four World Cups, Ricky starts this World Cup second on the overall run-list behind Tendulkar with 1537 runs. He had a terrific 2007 World Cup scoring 539 runs leading Australia to another spectacular World Cup win.
Jacques Kallis
kallis
No less a talent than Ponting or Tendulkar. Kallis, for me, might even be a notch higher than Ponting in terms of contribution to his team. He, in my list, would be counted amongst the two best all rounders ever only behind Sir Garfield Sobers himself. Kallis is almost as effective with the ball as he is with the bat. Made his debut in 1997, Kallis made his presence felt in the World Cup 1999 with his swing bowling and consistent batting. He, for a while, even opened the attack with Pollock to allow Donald to bowl first change. As a batsman, his contribution to the team has been enormous. Playing along with Gary Kirsten, Gibbs, Smith, Cullinan; Kallis made his own mark being the batsman with impeccable technique and someone who relied more on timing and placement than power. Over the years, he may have lost some pace but still is as handy with the ball.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul
shiv_chanderpaul
Made his debut in 1994 and was a part of the West Indian team that made to the semi finals of the World Cup 1996 and almost made it to the finals at the expense of Australia, but for a lower order collapse. Chanderpaul started off being an understudy to Brian Lara but took over and came on his own in 2001/02 where he performed admirably well against the visiting Indians. He is considered one of the best players of spin amongst players outside of the subcontinent. His free stance allows him to use his feet conveniently. Going by his built and thinking he can't attack would be a mistake. He is capable of accumulating runs at strike rate above 100. He currently is the senior most batsman in the WI team. Him retiring would be a big loss to the already dooming West Indian cricket. He is the last trace of 1990s in West Indian cricket.

Shoaib Akhtar
shoaib-akhtar
He clocked the fastest ball to be bowled in World Cups in the 1999 edition. He got Steve Waugh out to one of the most amazing yorkers seen in cricket annals in the same tournament. He was in his mettle in 1999. Troubled batsmen with his pace and brilliant variations. Shoaib Akhtar is one of the senior most members in the Pakistani team. He, Razzaq and Afridi are the only survivors from the 1999 Cup finalist team. Mentored by Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis in his early days, Shoaib today is leading the bowling attack with Umar Gul, Junaid Khan and Wahab Riaz to be mentored and supported by him. A successful campaign this World Cup could be a huge boost for him after a more or less controversy shrouded career he has had. He has shown a lot of character in coming back to play the game after injuries and disciplinary suspensions. He still has the pace and the accuracy to rattle the best in business. He mustn't be taken lightly at all.

Muttiah Muralitharan
 murali
It could be said, Murali had a huge role to play in Sri Lanka winning the 1996 World Cup. Him being called for chucking was taken so personally by Ranatunga, that he motivated his players and rallied them around to form a team that shocked one and all. Murali played a crucial role in the World Cup too. Amongst the best spinners and the greatest characters to have played the game, Murali must be wishing to end his career on a high after a successful retirement from tests last year. He was hugely instrumental in his team reaching the finals of the 2007 edition picking 23 wickets out of his 53 total World Cup wickets. Sri Lanka have Ajantha Mendis and Suraj Randiv replace when Murali's hangs his boots, but no one can fill the void for the great sportsman and ambassador for the game he has been. His detractors will continue to call him a chucker and discredit him for the wickets he has earned. Chucker or not, Murali has changed the meaning of spin bowling since his debut in 1993.

Sachin Tendulkar
sachin
He sure needs no introduction. He would walk into every World XI, ODI or Tests. Tendulkar had a phenomenal 1996 and 2003 World Cups. India got to the semi finals in both editions and went upto the finals in the latter. His aggregate 1796 World Cup runs will be hard to match. He has been the backbone of Indian batting for over 20 years now. Debuted in 1989, when some of his current team members were still in their diapers, he has broken every possible record in ODI batting. Most recently came the ODI double hundred at Gwalior last year. Winning the World Cup will be the perfect swansong for him like all others, but the patriot that he is and the passion he has he would want to win it for India than for his own benefit. He found his bearings under the supervision of seniors like Azhar, Srikkanth and Vengsarkar, blossomed playing together with contemporaries like Dravid, Ganguly, Jadeja, Kambli and now is the teacher and role model to new comers such as Kohli, Vijay, Raina and even Sehwag.

Cricket World Cup v IPL: Sponsors jostle for eyeballs

The ICC Cricket World Cup v Indian Premier League. That is the battle being fought on the sidelines as the world gets ready for two of cricket's biggest events. At stake is $330m (£204m) of potential advertising revenue. On one side is a tournament that is returning to Asia after a gap of 14 years. On the other, a snappy league that has captured new audiences and redefined the sport.

The two are now jostling for attention. The Indian Premier League (IPL) begins just six days after the World Cup. That has got the sponsors thinking about who to hedge their bets on. "The sponsors are having to make a call," says Saurabh Saksena, executive business director at JWT. Had these events been six months apart, each would have got more sponsors. From a marketer's point of view, what they are looking for is eyeballs. They don't want to spread themselves thin on either event," he adds.

The fact that both the events garner high viewership is not making the choice easy for advertisers. The Cricket World Cup will be broadcast to more than two billion viewers across the globe. For its part, the 2010 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), was the most watched sports event in India, according to TAM Media Research.
Eyes on India Despite its being a global event, the financial success of the World Cup is hugely dependent on the progress of the Indian team.

According to TAM Media research, viewership of the 2007 World Cup fell by almost 45% once India crashed out at the early stages. That can severely hit the earning potential of the broadcasters. The rights holders generally keep some slots in their kitty, hoping to cash in at a later stage. Ad spots in a World Cup final would fetch far higher rates if India was playing and vice versa. Even the sport's governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC) admits this.

"If the host nation goes through till the end, there is a sustained interest. All I can hope for is that the host nations remain engaged as deep into the competition as possible," ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat told Reuters earlier this week. The IPL, on the other hand, despite becoming a global event, remains an Indian league. All the teams are based in Indian cities and all of them have big name Indian players on their roll. So no matter which team progresses to the final stages, the viewers remain interested. This in turn keeps the sponsors' interest alive as well. Format wars

Its just not about the World Cup v the IPL. The ever-increasing popularity of the Twenty20 format has seen some question the very future of one-day cricket. The World Cup will provide a health check for the 50-over game and whether interest from sponsors is dwindling. "Twenty20 is catching everyone's imagination. It is like a Bollywood blockbuster, an entertaining, shorter-duration event for the entire family. It manages to garner eyeballs of women and much younger audiences as well," says JWT's Mr Saksena. "However, it is not wise to compare the World Cup to any other 50-over series. At this point of time, the World Cup is the most exciting thing that is around the corner."

World Cup 2011: Spinners are trump card

The mega cricket event, ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, is just few hours away from its start when India and Bangladesh will play the opening match on Saturday.

The 2011 World Cup is being co-hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The tracks in the sub-continent are believed to be slower one in comparison to England, Australia and South Africa.

In such circumstances, the role of spinners will be vital to check the run flow and win the matches.

The wickets are very slow in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

All the participating teams are aware of this condition, where tracks become slow and low in as the game progresses. Spinners like veteran Muttaiah Muralitharan, Harbhajan Singh, Daniel Vettori, Saeed Ajmal, Graeme Swann and Shakib-al-Hassan will be proved vital for their team’s success at the World Cup.

Some of the teams have the quality spinners but few will have to rely on their pace battery. The defending champions Australia will definitely miss the services of Nauthan Hauritz, who was ruled out of the tournament due to injury. Hauritz had the experience of playing in India. But in the absence of Hauritz, Jason Krejza will have to spearhead the Aussies spin department.

On the other hand, South Africa’s spin department will be led by Johan Botha.South Africa is also capable of beating anyone on their day. South Africa is a well-balanced unit, with five capable spinners and five quick’s in their squad. They have plenty of talent but a lot of their squad lack experience of playing on the subcontinent.

Johan Botha who is the experienced spinners in the side can turn the game.  The team also had Peterson who bowls left arm orthodox will also the key bowler on these slow and turning tracks.

England who had a cocky, confident, and attacking off spinner, Graeme Swann who approached his game on his own, has an art of finger spin.

On the other hand, New Zealand who is not expected to be the strong contenders of the trophy lacks the quality batsman. Their recent  performance in the one day matches were very poor but the team can do better.

They have the world class spinner; Captain Daniel Vettori can use his own bowling as an attacking option on the sub continent pitches. The team has another option as Woodcock who played well against the Pakistan, will be the spinner to watch.

However, Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan have the most dangerous spinners. It is expected that Asian teams will play with the tow spinners and two pacers.

Spin wizard Muttaiah Muralitharan, who is appearing in his last World Cup 2011, can wreck havoc in slow and low tracks.
Mystery bowler Ajantha Mendis will be another bowler to watch. Mendis’s carom delivery can be proved worrisome for the opponents in Asian  pitches.

The Indian team had the world class spinners like Harbhajan Singh. He can change the game on his own. He has various deliveries and his “Doosra” can trouble any batsman.

Piyush chawla and R Ashwin are likely to be included in the playing XI. However, both are playing their first World Cup.

Other than the services of the specialist Harbhajan, part-timers like Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Suresh Raina, Virender Sehwag can chip in with useful contributions.

Bangladesh’s talented left-arm spinners Shakib Al Hasan and Abdur Razzak’s recent performance against New Zealand and Zimbabwe at the home soil was enough indication of slow track in the sub-continent.The duo may force batsmen to dance on their tune.

As far as Pakistan is concerned, the team is believed to be dark horse. Shaid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal are world class spinner. Ajmal has become a dangerous spinner in the limited overs, adept at strangling run-rates and picking up key wickets; he was instrumental in Pakistan's 2009 World T20 triumph.

Ajmal had an option of Doosra with his wrist is difficult for the batsman, who approached him in front of the wickets.

Should you feel secure at the 2011 ICC ODI World Cup?
Indian authorities feel that you should.
Mumbai police have put in place extraordinary precautions to ensure that there are no disruptions or sabotage of the premier event.
The World Cup final will see snipers positioned on the terraces of the buildings surroundingWankhede stadium.
This is a first. It is an outcome of the 2008 terror attacks in the heart of South Mumbai.
Policemen will be equipped with Special Voice Ducers (SVD)—for effective communication in the midst of high levels of noise.
Plainclothes cops will monitor conversations and movement within the stadium.
All the elaborate arrangements could come to nought if the Pakistani cricket team makes the finals. The Shiv Sena, a militant Hindu party, have hinted at disrupting the final— in the event.
Senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP, Manohar Joshi said: “Shiv Sena chief  Bal Thackeray will take a call on whether they should be allowed to play in Mumbai.”
The Sena has opposed cricketing action featuring India’s north-west neighbour before.
In 1991, activists dug up the Wankhede pitch two days before a match against Pakistan.
In January 1999, the Ferozeshah Kotla ground was dug up before an India-Pakistan tie.
Mumbai will host three World Cup ties:
March 13: Canada versus New Zealand
March 18: Sri Lanka versus New Zealand
April 2: The World Cup Final.
Quote of the day:
I’m sick of following my dreams. I’m just going to ask them where they’re going and hook up with them later. – Mitch Hedberg

Grand opening ceremony launches cricket World Cup

Rock star Bryan Adams provided the sparks as a dazzling opening ceremony, showcasing a vibrant blend of sub-continental traditions and modernity, on Thursday launched the 10th edition of the cricket World Cup, setting the stage for 43 days of high-voltage cricketing extravaganza. Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina declared the event open amid thundering cheers from a packed crowd at the renovated Bangabandhu stadium, marking the return of the showpiece event to the sub-continent after a gap of 15 years.

The evening sky lit up with spectacular fireworks as the high-profile 14-team competition was declared open in front of
a host of dignitaries and top ICC and Cricket Board officials.

Captains of all the 14 participating nations got an unforgettable ride on tri-cycles while music, folk songs and dances, breath-taking fireworks and the collective enthusiasm of the Bangladeshi capital ushered in the event in a two-hour
spectacle.

Bryan Adams' mesmerising act was the highlight of the show that also had Indian musicians Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy belting
out the World Cup theme song 'De Ghuma Ke' composed by the trio.

Indian playback singer Sonu Nigam and top Bangladeshi vocalists -- Runa Laila, Sabina Yasmin and Mumtaz -- also crooned in front of a capacity crowd which was treated to a musical extravaganza in three languages -- English, Hindi and Bangla.

Singer Ebrar Tipu and others set the tone for the evening as he arrived in a bedecked car to sing the welcome song, "O
Prithibi, Ebar Eshey Banglake Nao Chiney…" (Hey world, come and know Bangladesh).

All the 14 captains came into the arena on decorated rickshaws with Australian captain Ricky Ponting coming in first followed by the other captains.

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni drew a loud applause while the biggest cheer was reserved for host captain Shakib Al Hasan as he waved to the crowd.

After all the captains assembled on the specially erected dias, Indian singer Sonu Nigam then rendered the "Spirit of Cricket' song.

After the speeches by top officials, including ICC President Sharad Pawar who spoke a few lines in Bangla, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina declared the event open, setting the stage for Adams and other celebrated artistes to enthrall the audience.

A breath-taking aerial cricket match, played horizontally on a building, kept the spectators spellbound.

Nearly 2,100 school and college students and 350 members of the Armed Forces presented a cultural programme depicting the glorious Language Movement, War of Liberation, Bangladesh’s founder Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's historic March 7 speech, Bangla New Year and traditional dance of the indigenous communities.

Adams then took centrestage with some of his all-time hits like "Lets make it a night to remember", "Summer of '69", and "18 till I die" among others.

Barely 10 years after being given the Test status, it was a giant leap for Bangladesh as a nation as the minnows, known to pull off stunning wins in big events, hosted perhaps the biggest sporting show so far in their history.

Two days later, Bangladesh and co-hosts India will clash in the inaugural game at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur to herald the beginning of 43 days of action spread across 13 venues in three countries.

The other host country, Sri Lanka start off their campaign against lowly Canada in a Group A encounter in Colombo on Sunday.

The sub-continent had its first date with the World Cup when India and Pakistan hosted it in 1987 before Sri Lanka joined them in 1996.

Sub-continent, for all practical purposes, is the nerve centre of the game now, though 1992 champions Pakistan could not be one of the co-hosts due to the terror attacks that targetted touring Sri Lankan cricketers in 2009. But Bangladesh will be having one big party in their silver jubilee year of initiation into one-day cricket.

The tenth edition of cricket's quadrennial showpiece, featuring 14 teams and 49 matches -- 29 in India, a dozen in Sri Lanka and eight in Bangladesh -- was not devoid of controversies.

It had a nightmare of an initial road as Pakistan was stripped of the right to host 14 matches due to the volatile condition in the country though the country will get its share of revenue even without holding games.

There were minor hiccups even after that when Kolkata's historic Eden Gardens lost the hosting rights for the February 27 India-England clash after the ICC found the venue ill-prepared.

With any marquee match involving India not scheduled in the Eden after the ICC shifted teh India-England match to Bangalore, cricket lovers will not see the stadium at its magnificent best as not many can be expected in the one lakh-capacity venue for non-India match.

On current form and considering the conditions, India have been billed favourites by cricket experts and it would be a huge celebration for Indian fans if Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men lift the trophy on April 2 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

It would add to India's muscle-flexing power as cricket's financial centre.

A World Cup win by India will also ensure the iconic batsman Sachin Tendulkar the only success that has eluded him in his illustrious over-two-decade-long international career, besides India bringing home the trophy after 28 years.
