Pakistan vs India – ‘The War is On’ says Sania Mirza

Unless you have been sleeping under the rock, you probably know about the big day that’s just 5 days away now: Pakistan-India semi final. Speculations of all sorts are in the air and the crowd is getting crazy.

Tennis star & wife of ex captain of Pakistan cricket team, Sania Mirza, says “The War is On”.

I know it’s weird that I actually thought about this but when they got married earlier in April, I thought to myself who will Sania be supporting in a Pakistan-India cricket match. Well, we have an answer and an interesting one.

Sania Mirza tweeted on her official account

I support India and @realshoaibmalik will support Pakistan as usual!the war is on..lol..hahah

To which Shoaib replied

@MirzaSania yes pls be ready baby its on lol hahaha

Sania-Shoaib at 'war' over Indo-Pak clash

With India and Pakistan gearing for a much-awaited clash for a slot in the 2011 World Cup final match, Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has declared war on her cricketer hubby Shoaib Malik, a Pakistani national, who will be supporting the visiting team.

Expectations are high in the cricket-crazy region for a mouth-watering Indo-Pak encounter in the semi-final match on March 30 in Mohali, and the couple seem to have been caught in the battle of loyalities.

Yuvraj looks forward to dream semi-final

"I support India and Shoaib Malik will support Pakistan as usual! The war is on.. lol (laughing out loud)..hahah" tweeted Mirza on the micro-blogging site Twitter.

"Yes pls (please) be ready baby, it's on... lol... hahaha," replied Malik.

Mirza also cheered for Team India and said: "Well well, India VS Pakistan.. Last time (when) they played in Mohali, I watched the match live..what a semfinal on the line..wish I could be there!"

Former Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi also tweeted: "India Pak Semis will be a great match to watch in Mohali."

Where India always beats Pakistan

Indian tennis ace Mahesh Bhupathi also congratulated the Indian cricket team on securing the semi-final berth, and wrote on Twitter: "There we go:) enjoy it boys... You're half way there... We are dancing in Miami."

India and Pakistan have not played in any bilateral series since the Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008. The Pakistan cricketers have also not played in the Indian Premier League since its first edition in early 2008.

India vs Pakistan World Cup semi-final: Fans scramble for tickets

Tickets for the much-anticipated India- Pakistan World Cup semifinal have been sold out days ago but the mad scramble for them continues with desperate fans flocking the PCA stadium here even today.

Scores of fans could be seen moving around the stadium hoping desperately to grab a ticket from somewhere.

On Tuesday itself, the PCA had announced that 14,000 tickets at its disposal had been sold to the public through the designated bank and its counters and asked the fans not to approach them now.

However, fans are not prepared to give up. "I have been coming here since Monday, but have not been able to get any ticket," said Vikas Sharma, a young executive with a private company.

Allegations that black marketers are making a killing have been flying thick and fast.

"The tickets are available, but if you pay Rs 3,000 for a Rs 250 ticket and shell out Rs 10,000 for a Rs 1,000 ticket. Those selling in black have managed to purchase tickets in bulk," alleged Ram Kumar, a bank officer in Chandigarh.

"The semi-final match is going to be mother of all battles, in a way even bigger than the finals. Genuine fans should not be deprived of watching the match and police should take tough action against those selling in black," he said.

A good number of fans are also expected to come here from across the border to support Pakistan.

Representatives of some corporates willing to pay astronomical amounts could be seen making a beeline outside the PCA in their desperate bid to get tickets of the prized boxes.

Meanwhile, with top dignitaries from India and Pakistan expected to be there to watch the match, top police brass reviewed the security arrangements that will be put in place.

Nearly 2,000 cops are expected to be deployed in and around the PCA stadium as part of security measures, police sources said.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sent an invite to his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani and President Asif Ali Zardari to watch the match.

"We are also expecting many other top dignitaries from the two countries and therefore maximum security will be in place for the match," a Punjab police official said.

Hotel Taj in Chandigarh, about 12km from here, where the two teams are staying has been turned into a fortress with 1,000 cops deployed for security.

Have we seen the Ponting farewell?

Who would have bargained for the current line up in the Semi Finals when the world cup started in February? India vs Pakistan was never spoken of or on the cards! But what a turn around it has been? India vs Pakistan and the chances of a Sri Lanka vs South Africa showdown as well!

At the beginning of the tournament my hunch was definitely India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan amongst the final four! I was also of the view that South Africa in all probability could be the fourth team. However my learned cricketing friends added a new argument and a new dimension and persuaded to change my thinking slightly and add Australia to the line up, which I reluctantly did.

That part of the thinking has been proved wrong. However I could still be proved wrong with other semi finalists. Instead we could have New Zealand and England or Sri Lanka vs New Zealand game or even and England vs South Africa game! Despite all these possibilities, I am inclined to believe it will be Sri Lanka vs South Africa at the Premadasa stadium come the 29th March!

A thought on Australia vs India game! To me, India won the game with their over all superiority than really the Aussies loosing it. India on the day was definitely standing head and shoulders above the Australians who actually did well to post the 260/6 in the allotted 50 overs, on a track that appeared to be slow and also had some purchase to the spinners.

Ponting who had a hundred against India the last time the two teams met which was the 2003 world cup final, repeated his feat once more a good eight years later, though he ended on the loosing side. His batting against India resembled the Ponting of old though sadly he had little or no support at the other end to build on his innings. One wonders whether we have seen the last of Ponting! I believe we have. The Australian skipper wasn’t the darling amongst his country’s fans as he was some time ago and I wonder whether it was fate that made him score that hundred which in all eventuality could be his farewell innings.

This is a hundred Australians will least remember as it involved a loosing cause!
The Australians were obviously the under dogs going in to the Semi Final, with the Indian batting which is their strong point appearing to click at the right time. Yuvraj Singh the left handed all rounder has been the player for India in this world cup and it will be no surprise if he wins the coveted “Most valuable player” award as he has been outstanding in all departments.

The other strong point for the Indians has been the dynamic Little Master Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar’s batting has been a class act and appears to be getting better by the day. The Indians have definitely started to bat around the little master, proving it to be a successful ploy. Tendulkar’s grit and determination in his advanced cricketing age and his will to succeed has drawn praise from the West Indian Coach Otis Gibson who wanted his players to approach the game in the manner Tendulkar does. He was of course referring to the West Indian top order that came a cropper once more and was humiliated by Pakistan. Yes on paper the West Indies look experienced and decent but in reality they are a far cry! In the game against India I wonder whether any team worth its salt would have lost from the position, the West Indies were in at a 150/2. But on that fateful day against India the West Indies did!

Then in the Semi Final the capitulation against Pakistan was painstaking for the Caribbean supporters who were used to the days of the Caribbean Kings under the great Clive Lloyd, who won the world cup in the first two competitions and could have easily repeated the third time too! But alas in the quarter final West Indies cricket wasn’t good enough and it was only obvious that the exit will happen in haste! When the Pakistan openers won the game by ten wickets, I believe the ultimate humiliation and degrading of West Indies cricket was complete! Immediately after the Australian game a hilarious text message was doing its rounds! It said India will meet Pakistan in the Semi Final whilst the Australians and West Indies will meet at the airport! Funnily true!

So it will now be India vs Pakistan in one Semi Final and that is in Chandigarh. For Pakistan the geographical significance of the city which is in Punjab is bound to be a factor that will inspire them. It too a great extent will be a home coming of some sort for the Pakistanis, as a crowd of around five thousand are expected to attend the game. Besides the conditions which are generally seam friendly is about the best Pakistan could have hoped for in a game against India, whose attack is based on spin.

From Indian point of view the Pressure has started to mount! No Indian can forgive a defeat to Pakistan. A defeat at the hands at any other country could be tolerated but not by Pakistan the arch rival and the sworn enemy. It will be in that back ground that the Indians will take the field on the 30th March hoping that their quest for the World Cup title will still be intact when the game is concluded. For Pakistan they have no such issues as they were never favourites and in reality has nothing to loose but everything to gain!

The Indians have stopped the Australian dominance which had run for twelve long years. They have just two more days of serious cricket, one of them against Pakistan and who knows the other? Sri Lanka perhaps! The Semi Final stage couldn’t have got any better!

India vs. Pakistan: its more than a game…its personal!

India vs. Pakistan: its more than a game…its personal!

India versus Pakistan is always a treat to watch for the cricket crazy fans of both the countries. An average competition between the two cricketing nations successfully manages to attract a great deal of coverage and viewership from all over the world. The rivalry between the two nations is considered to be one of the most intense and fierce rivalries in sports history.

Defeat at any cost is not acceptable by fans of both the countries. An India-Pakistan fixture holds an eminent position even in the life of those people who are not genuinely interested in the gentlemen’s game.

Political relationships between both the countries have been jeopardised by various conflicts, and these conflicts play a pivotal role in triggering emotions even if it is in the cricketing arena.

Encounter between these arch rivals is usually a high-drama affair, with aggression, sledging, intimidation and emotions running high. Fielders can be seen throwing themselves around, spear heads charging in with a will to eliminate the opponent and batsmen trying to clobber the ball out of the park.

The two sides have played a total of 119 One Day Internationals against each other, out of which India has won 46, while Pakistan has won 69. India, however, has a convincing 4-0 record over Pakistan as far as the grand showdown in the ICC World Cup is concerned.

Let’s see who emerges victorious this time around: Shahid Afridi’s underdogs or M.S Dhoni’s favourites for the mega event. India enjoys a vital competitive edge over the Men in Green because they have never lost to Pakistan in this prestigious competition.

Off the field, war of words has taken center stage. Both the skippers are aiming high and people of their countries are backing them with full zeal and zest.

India is considered to be the favourites of the tournament and as they are competing in their own backyard, but the home crowd advantage in these kinds of crunch games sometimes backfires.

Pakistan, after their convincing win over the Aussies, are focused, dedicated and determined to win against all odds. The Men in Green are the most unpredictable teams of the cricketing world and can upset any opponent at any given day.

Pakistan has a fierce pace attack, and its strength lies in its bowling. On the other hand the Men in Blue are capable of thrashing any pace attack of the world.

If India loses in India, it will be the biggest upset of this championship.

It’s going to be the calmness of M.S Dhoni tested against the aggression of Shahid Khan Afiridi at Mohali. It’s going to be Shoaib Akhtar’s breath taking speed against the swash buckling hitting of Virender Sehwag. Yuvraj Singh will also be by the likes of Saeed Ajmal, Abdur Rehman and Mohammad Hafeez.

The highlight of the day, however, will be the much awaited on-field exchange of emotions between the two teams. Its already being tipped the ‘final before the final’.

The two sides will lock horns on March 30, 2011, at Mohali.

India vs Pakistan: Gilani accepts Manmohan's invitation

Pakistani Prime Minister Yusuf Gilani has accepted Dr Manmohan Singh's invitation to watch the semifinal match between Pakistan and India in Mohali.

The dream match will be held on Wednesday, March 30 at PCA stadium in Mohali.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday had extended an invitation to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yusuf Gilani to watch the crucial match along with him.

The invitation letter to Pakistani Prime Minister said that “"It gives me great pleasure to invite you and your gracious wife to visit Mohali and join me, my wife and the millions of fans from our two countries to watch the match."

India qualified for the semifinal after defeating Australia by five wickets in a quarterfinal match.

On the other hand, Pakistan defeated West Indies in a quarterfinal match to book its berth in semifinal.

There is huge excitement over the match in both the countries. Several celebrities are expected to land up at Mohali to watch this crucial match.

Gilani will watch India vs Pak game at Mohali

Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has accepted Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's invitation for the India-Pak encounter in Mohali on Wednesday.

Dr Singh had individually written to both PM Gilani and President Zardari inviting them to attend the semi-final match.

This will be the first major bilateral event at the summit level between the two sides since the 26/11 attacks when relations between the two countries plunged to a new low.

This is also the first time in World Cup history that India and Pakistan are going to play against each other at the semi-final level.

The last time they met was in 2003 at the knock-out stages. Every time the two teams have clashed before in World Cup, India has won.

ICC Cricket World Cup edition is a hit: Shetty

Ratnakar Shetty, the tournament director of the ICC 2011 World Cup, said on Friday that the current World Cup is a hit in the sub-continent.
"This edition is certainly a hit. The sub-continent fans have not only enjoyed seeing their respective teams, but even other teams got good audiences. That is because they are seeing top quality cricket in this competition," Shetty said and added that gate collections even for non-India matches have been good.
According to Shetty, Friday's match between South Africa and New Zealand was played in front of a packed house at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium. "This once again proves how big a brand this is."

ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 SWOT analysis of Team India vs Pakistan

With Sachin Tendulkar planning to quit after this World Cup, the bar is set much higher for the Indian players. Team India stands as one of the favorites alongside a formidable Sri Lanka, a strong South Africa, T20 Champions England and the reigning ODI champions Australia.
The players selected by BCCI are: MS Dhoni (Captain), V Sehwag (Vice-captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel, Praveen Kumar, Ashish Nehra, R Ashwin, Piyush Chawla.
Cricket experts say that bowlers win you test matches while batsmen win you ODI?s. If this is indeed true then India stands a bright chance for they have a splendid batting line up.
Sachin ,Sehwag ,Gambhir take up the first three slots while ,Dhoni and Pathan will be at six and seven respectively. Num 4 and 5 slots will be a tossup between Kohli,Yuvraj and Raina. The bowling side has 3 spinners and 4 seamers. The bowling department may not look that strong with Nehra and Munaf there but considering Patel?s recent form he also becomes a force to reckon with. The spin attack led by Bhajji looks good and also the part timers have proved their worth.
Strengths:
Balanced Team: The team is a perfect combination of both experienced as well youth. Though the bowling department looks a little weak, presence of Zaheer and Harbhajan should exude confidence to others in the team. After a long time Indian tail has started wagging which was evident in the last Series as well as the warm up match against Australia.
Home Conditions: Since the World Cup is being played in the subcontinent, the Indian cricket team can expect the maximum crowd support. The Indian stadiums will be expecting a crowd of about 50,000.
Weakness:
Consistency: Off late team India has not being able to perform consistently. A lot of the games show that individual performers have saved the game. If the team India aims to win the WC then they have to perform collectively and every player have to play to their fullest.
Brittle Middle Order: Yuvaraj and Raina are not in good form and have been picked mainly based on their past performance. It is an altogether a different issue that both of them are game changers but their current forms are the weak links.
Absence of a genuine Allrounder: For the past 4 years selectors have been trying to groom one genuine allrounder , but with little sucesss. The fifth bowler slot is absent which makes the team to rely on bowlers like Yuvaraj and company.
Opportunities:
Spinning Subcontinent Pitches: The pitches in the subcontinent are very favorable for spinners and India has opted for 3 spinners. Its part-timers are also spinners. Both Ashwin and Chawla have a chance to shine in their 1st WC and aid Bhajji in the sub-continent conditions. With spinners, India would be restricting the opposition at the same time will be an attacking team.
Virat Kohli: The young star has been in brilliant touch and was India's highest run-getter in 2010 so this is the big chance for him to stand out and fix his place in the team's middle order.
Sachin Swansong: The only accolade missing in Tendulkar's illustrious career. The entire country wants it for him and also the entire team wants to win the cup for him. This should act as an extra motivation for everyone in the team.
Threats:
Injuries: A lot of Indian players have just come back after injuries. Though fully fit their fitness would still be suspect and they would be short of match practice.
No back-up keeper: So who keeps if MSD is declared unfit right before a match?
Team Pakistan:
Pakistan team doesn't seem to be playing under any pressure. The reasons are obvious, earning a malign reputation by spot fixing scandals and infighting, the Pakistan cricket fraternity is on a recovery mode. With Salman Butt, Mohammed Asif and Mohammed Amer suspended, the first choice bowling attack of Pakistan is gone. With the captaincy issue getting resolved recently, the team morale won't be that high. But still a sub-continent team in sub-continent cannot be ignored.
THE SQUAD
Shoaib Akhtar, Muhammad Hafeez, Kamran Akmal, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq, Asad Shafiq, Umer Akmal, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Abdul Rehman, Saeed Ajmal, Umer Gul, Wahab Riaz, Sohail Tanvir, Ahmed Shehzad.
Young Players
Out of the 15 chosen, 8 are those who have never been part of an event of this importance. Clearly the Pakistan selectors did not have an option and leaving out Imran Nazir reaffirms the fact that they wanted to start afresh. If we start taking the replacements for the suspended tainted trio, Ahmed Shehzad is in for Butt and Shehzad has definitely proved himself.
He has a distinction of playing at the highest level and then going back to represent Pakistan in the Under 19 World cup. He only has one gear and that is to clear the in-field any how, he is not afraid to take on the fastest of the bowlers and even on bouncy wickets he has played some magnificent shots on the rise. He won't get that pace in sub-continent and moreover his 7 match experience might not be enough.
Umar Akmal, a prodigy in the making, probably a complete batsmen Pakistan have produced after the era of Saeed Anwar. Though Younis Khan is probably the best Pakistan has got at the moment. This would be the make or break tournament for Umar and to utilize his complete ability he must be slotted at No.3 nothing below that.
Wahab Riaz, is the replacement for Mohhammed Asif and to be fair on him he is a decent catch from the bowling factory. He has not exactly filled in the shoes of Asif but his approach ahs been commendable and as with Umar it would be make or break trip that he would be making to India.
Weakness
On the other hand there is Mohammed Hafeez, Pakistan selectors does seem to have a blind faith on this player. With an average of 22 in 62 ODIs, how he has made it to the squad is a question, only reason one can think of is, he is not swashbuckling as Shehzad so they assumed he would be the calmer and wiser partner.
Mohammed Amer could have been the potent weapon for Pakistan instead they had to content themselves with the old potent weapons, Shohib Akhtar. as an old war veteran, it is not his pace or form which has made him survive this long, it's probably his never say die attitude and this never "say die attitude" unfortunately looks good .
Being hit for an economy of more than 8 and again coming back to bowl the full quota of overs to end up with run rate of 7 does not fit the bill for never say die attitude. That plainly is poor bowling but Pakistan selectors as I mentioned earlier tend to assume a lot of things.
Putting Kamran Akmal in the slot is just because of the poor form he is in, he tried his hands as an opener then at number 3 with no effect. In recent times, he has been very successful in the sub-continent primarily against India and his being in form would be of prime importance. He is more like Suresh Raina of Pakistan, unpredictable yet assuring figure.
Inspirational Misbah Ul Haq is a player of calibre but his big match playing credential is doubted.
Abdul Razzak is more of confusion; unpredictability has hovered all around his cricketing career. Not as strong a bowler he used to be but he is the variation guy of the team. He can pack a punch and on a given day could be more barbaric than Yusuf Pathan, but its all about him clicking or not. Not exactly a worry but can't put him in chances section as well.
Chances
Chances have to be read as Umar Gul and Shahid Afridi. Gul is the strike bowler, best exponent of death bowling and Shahid Afridi along with Saeed Ajmal, is the best spinning duo in the world cup. With one having the knack of picking up wickets and other is choking down the batsmen.
Younis Khan just cannot afford to have a bad day on the field as he would be the spine of Pakistani batting attack.
Semi-final could be the maximum they could reach but again unpredictability is what Pakistan cricket lives with.

Sania-Shoaib's Twitter war over India vs Pak

A "war" seems to be brewing between Indo-pak couple of Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik ahead of the high-voltage World Cup semifinal clash between India and arch-rivals Pakistan in Mohali next week.

The much-awaited clash of the neighbours seems to have caught the couple in a battle of loyalty with the Indian tennis diva, Sania strongly coming out in support of her native nation, while hubby Shoaib cheering for Pakistan.

"I support India and shoaibmalik will support Pakistan as usual!the war is on," said Sania Mirza.

"Be ready baby its on lol hahaha," reacted Malik.

The mouth-watering encounter between the two neighbouring countries has set social networking site 'Twitter' abuzz with sportspersons and Bollywood personalities hailing Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men and wishing them luck for the important match.

"There we go:) enjoy it boys.. You're half way there... We are dancing in Miami," tweeted Indian tennis star, Mahesh Bhupathi.

Bollywood actress and co-owner of Rajasthan Royals, Shilpa Shetty, wrote on her Twitter page, "Yesssssssssssssssss We did it, good job team india...fabulous work Yuvi:)In the Semis...Bring it on, yipeeeeeeeeee!."

"India-Pak Semis will be a great match to watch in Mohali. Great win. Great Game. Congrats to the Team for a brilliant performance. Look forward to the Semi finals," tweeted former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman, Lalit Modi.

England's Kevin Pietersen, who was forced to cut-short his World Cup campaign following hernia, had his word of appreciation for the left-handed Yuvraj Singh.

"Congrats India!! @yuvsingh09 on fire.. ?" the batsman tweeted.

India yesterday set up an exciting semi-final clash against Pakistan after the hosts ran home with a five-wicket win over Australia at Ahmedabad's Motera stadium.

Chasing a moderate total of 261, Dhoni's men held their nerves to overhaul the target with 14 balls to spare with Yuvraj Singh (57 not out), Sachin Tendulkar (53) and Gautam Gambhir (50) being the star batting performers.

Ind vs Pak: Some Indo-Pak matches memorabilia

If there is one thing which can bring a whole nation to a standstill; can be more engrossing than a Alfred Hitchcock classic and gripping than the finest of Greek tragedies, it has to be an India-Pakistan cricket match. It is the stage where heroes are immortalized while the villains are condemned for life.

Just to add more spice to this concoction - if that's still possible - the latest India-Pakistan match comes at a stage when the teams are eyeing a World Cup final berth. TOI takes a look at some of the classics down the years which are still fresh in every cricket fan's mind.

1996 World Cup quarterfinal in Bangalore

India decided to bat first in this high-voltage clash at home. Navjot Singh Sidhu laid the platform with a 115-ball 93 at the top of the order, but what would have been a competitive total was turned into match-winning one by an awe-inspiring assault by Ajay Jadeja (45 off 25 balls with two sixes and four fours). Jadeja waded into Waqar Younis as Pakistan's strike-bowler went for 40 runs in his last two overs.

Pakistan were still in the match with Aamer Sohail (55 off 46 balls) and Saeed Anwar (48 off 32 balls) going great guns. The occasion and the adrenaline got to Sohail as he lost the plot against Venkatesh Prasad going for an ill-advised slog and his team ultimately fell short by 39 runs.

1998 Independence Cup final in Dhaka

It was Pakistan's turn to bat first and they posted a massive total of 314/5 in 48 overs with centuries from Saeed Anwar (140) and Ijaz Ahmed (117). Sachin Tendulkar got India off to a flyer with 41 off 26 balls before Saurav Ganguly (124) and Robin Singh (82) took over. With 10 runs to win in the last over in pitch darkness it looked all over. Hrishikesh Kanitkar became a hero with one stroke - sweeping Saqlain Mushtaq to the fence to seal the three-wicket win with a ball to spare.

The evergreen clash is still in memories of the former Maharshtra batsman.

"The pressure was immense like in every final but this was India vs Pakistan. Fielding first helped me calm my nerves. The more closer we got in the chase the more my heart started pounding. The fear of losing began to rise before I went into bat. But once in the middle, I blanked everything out. My only focus was to watch the ball which was especially important because it was pitch-dark by the time the last ball was bowled," Kanitkar recalled.

1986 Australasia Cup final in Sharjah

Half-centuries by Sunil Gavaskar, Krish Srikkanth and Dilip Vengsarkar helped the World Champions post 245, batting first. Javed Miandad powered the chase with 116 off 114 balls with three fours and three sixes - the third of which came off the last ball of the match off Chetan Sharma. India took almost a decade to recover from Miandad's devastating blow.

Gilani accepts PM's invitation to watch WC semi-final

Pakistan Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani on Sunday accepted his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh's invitation to watch the World Cup semi-final between the cricket teams of the two countries at Mohali on March 30.
The decision was taken following a meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and Gilani, which began at midnight last night and lasted for about two hours.
At the meeting, it was decided that "in response to the Indian Prime Minister's invitation, the Prime Minister of Pakistan will visit India to witness the semi-final (of World Cup) between the two cricket teams," Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said.
He said that Pakistan had already welcomed Singh's invitation to Zardari and Gilani to watch the match.
'The News' daily, meanwhile, quoted its sources as saying that Gilani would informally meet Singh during the match and a formal meeting would be held after the game.
Separately, 'The Nation' newspaper quoted its sources as saying that Gilani would pay a two-day visit to India for a fresh round of "cricket diplomacy."
It said that Gilani's decision to accept Singh's invitation has been conveyed to New Delhi through diplomatic channels.

India Vs Pakistan semi final ICC Cricket World Cup

INDIA AND Pakistan, the two cricket crazy nations where cricket is like a religion, will meet in the second semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 at Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali on Wednesday, March 30.
An India vs Pakistan semi-final match of the World Cup 2011 will be the fifth encounter in a Cricket World Cup between the neighbouring countries since 1992 Cricket World Cup.
However, neither team has met in the semi-final or final of any of the previous World Cup matches. India has never lost to Pakistan in the Cricket World Cup so far.
In their first meet at Sydney Cricket Ground on March 4, 1992, during the 16th match of the Benson & Hedges World Cup, India won by 43 runs. In that match Sachin Tendulkar was named man-of-the-match for his all-round performance. He scored 54 runs and got the wicket of the dangerous left-handed batsman Aamer Sohail.
Both teams met for the second time in the second quarter final match of the Wills World Cup 1996 played at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore. India won that match by 39 runs and reached the semi final. Indian opener Navjot Sidhu scored 96 runs and Ajay Jadeja scored quick 45 runs in 25 balls in the last overs of the inning. Venkatesh Prasad and Anil Kumble took three wickets each. Sidhu was announced man-of-the-match.
ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 semi finalist India and Pakistan met for the third time in the Super Sixes of the ICC World Cup 1999 at Old Trafford, Manchester. On that match India defeated Pakistan India by 47 runs. In that match Rahul Dravid and Mohammad Azharuddin played fifty-plus innings. Fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad was declared man-of-the-match because he ensured that five Pakistani batsmen went back to the pavilion.
For the fourth time, two arch rivals India and Pakistan met at SuperSport Park in Centurion, South Africa during the pool 'A' match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003. With a quick fire knock by Sachin Tendulkar and a brilliant 50 by Yuvraj Singh, India won the match by six wickets. Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 98 runs, was awarded with the man-of-the-match.
In all the four previous ICC Cricket World Cup matches between India and Pakistan, the team that has won the toss, has decided to bat first. Out of the four matches, Indian captains have won the toss three times.

New Zealand vs South Africa

New Zealand beat south africa by 49 runs.

India 8-13 to win World Cup semi with Pakistan

ENGLAND’S amazing World Cup campaign took another twist on Thursday when it was announced that Mike Yardy had withdrawn from the Three Lions squad with depression. Yorkshire leg-spinning all-rounder Adil Rashid has been allowed to join Andrew Strauss's men before they take on Sri Lanka in a quarter-final in Colombo.

Andrew Strauss’s are 13-8 to turn over Kumar Sangakkara's charges and qualify for the semi-finals like co-hosts India, who dumped out holders Australia in Ahmedabad, when winning by five wickets.

MS Dhoni's men are now 7-4 tournament favourites and 8-13 to beat Pakistan in the first semi-final in Mohali on Wednesday.

Gold and Greens skipper Ricky Ponting, a runner-up in 1996 and three-time winner since, top-scored with 104 at 4-1 in a total of 260-6.

But Yuvraj Singh, who headed the home lists at 11-2 with 57 not out, and Suresh Raina held steady for India with a 74-run partnership from 187-5.

India Vs Pakistan Semifinal – Preview World Cup Prediction

The ongoing match against Pakistan and The West Indies seems like the Asin  side would win the match hands down. Being a optimistic India, I prefer  India to win the defending champions Australia and enter the semifinals  taking on rivals Pakistan opposite to us.

Now let us compare the strengths and lacking points of both the  teams and jump into a probable conclusion on the optimistically  predicted India Vs Pakistan semifinals.

India Vs Pakistan Semifinal – Pressure factor:

Obviously  any cricketing side would feel the pressure in a semi-final match  irrespective of whatever nation they are playing against since World Cup  happens to the most prestigious trophy which all the countries dream  of. Added to this India and Pakistan being rival countries, will have  the expectation level of the fans at soaring heights.

India will  feel intense heat since they happen to be co-hosts of the World Cup  2011. The breather factor is that India will not be playing their  semifinal in India if they happen to meet Pakistan.

India Vs Pakistan Semifinal – Bowling lineup:

As  some of the Asian pitches have been turned as perfect bowling tracks,  bowling becomes an important factor for winning matches. On the  Pakistani side Umar Gul, Abdul Razzaq, Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal are  in good form. Moreover a bowling pitch might favor Pakistan better than  India as Pakistan have won the match against Canada and mighty  Australia through their bowling capabilities.

Indians are still  trailing behind international bowling standards with only Zaheer Khan  and Munaf Patel reaching the expectation levels. Part time bowlers  Yuvraj, Raina and Yusuf are doing a good job for quickly completing the  slog overs.

India Vs Pakistan Semifinal – Batting Strengths:

India has a mighty batting lineup when compared to the Pakistanis. Sachin Tendulkar, Gautham  Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh and injured Shewag are the key batsmen in the  Indian side. If the openers fail, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh and skipper  MS Dhoni can do the patch work in t he middle overs and handover the  scoring chances for Yusuf Pathan (don't forget Bhajji)in the last 10  overs.

Considering the Pakistani batting department Kamran Akmal,  Younis Khan, Umar Akmal, Abdul Razzaq are playing free flowing cricket.  Kamran Akmal and Umar Akmal have the ability of scoring quick and fast  which would provide a good start for the Pakistanis. Younis Khan will  work out the singles and doubles to keep the score board ticking in the  middle overs and Abdul Razzaq and Misbah are perfect match finishers.

ICC Cricket World Cup: From Motera to Mohali, and then Mumbai?

If you thought a bleeding Brett Lee summed up intensity on the cricket field, wait till Team India take on Pakistan in the semifinal at Mohali.

It's the match that fans, organizers and advertisers have been fantasizing about, and the fact that it will be Pakistan's first match on Indian soil since 26/11 lends an extra edge, if any was needed.

The bad news first: Pakistan are on a dream run. They thrive on confidence and momentum, and given current form look hard to beat. Besides, India have played Pakistan in ODIs twice at this venue in the past, in 1999 and 2007, and lost on both occasions.

But this is the World Cup, where India have never lost to Pakistan. Not once, over four pulsating encounters.

Interestingly, Australian captain Ricky Ponting, whose side lost to both the teams, backed India to beat Pakistan.

Imran Khan, the only Pakistani captain to lift the Cup, however believes the pressure of playing Pakistan at home may prove too much for India.

At first glance, it seems to be Pakistan's bowling vs India's batting. But ultimately, it could be about who wins the battle of nerves. Both sides are battle-hardened, and unlikely to blink first.

Ind vs Aus: Semifinal against Pakistan a dream match: Yuvraj

His dream of guiding India to a win over Australia in the World Cup realised, star batsman Yuvraj Singh is now focussing on the semifinal clash against arch-rivals Pakistan, saying the much-anticipated game would be a battle of equals.

Yuvraj struck an unbeaten half century after claiming two wickets last night to collect his fourth man of the match trophy in the ongoing World Cup.

Looking ahead to the semifinal clash against Pakistan at Mohali on March 30, Yuvraj said it would be another dream game.

"The India-Pakistan game is going to be another dream game after India-Australia. It's a great victory for India today. We would be playing our best cricket against Pakistan. They know our game we know theirs both teams are equal. They have had a very good tournament and have beaten West Indies and Australia," Yuvraj told reporters after India's five-wicket win over the defending champions.

"We don't want to think about the Pakistan game now. It has been a high-pressure game for us (against Australia) and lot of our system has been drained. We would like to relax for a couple of days and then make plans about Pakistan game," he added.

It was very difficult to keep his emotions in check in the high-octane quarterfinal match.

"Over the last one year I have been dreaming of staying till the end and taking the team to victory against Australia in the World Cup and the moment has come. This is the moment I have lived for as a cricketer," he said.

He admitted that it was a tough situation with enormous pressure on him and any small mistake on his part could have thrown India out of the World Cup.

"It was very hard to control emotions. It was difficult to control oneself in such a situation as one mistake and you will be out of the World Cup. I tried to just watch the ball, play down the ground and not lift the ball in the air," said the left-handed batsman.

Yuvraj said he was playing in the tournament with the thought of someone special in his life, though he did not specify the person.

"I am playing for a very special person that comes in my mind and whenever things are not going well I think of that person and things work out," he remarked.

Yuvraj conceded that the dismissal of Gautam Gambhir, who was run out due to a misunderstanding with him, and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in quick succession had put the team under pressure but Suresh Raina lived up to the challenge in crucial stages.

"When Gambhir got out I thought I will get a good partnership going with MS (Dhoni) but when MS got out I knew I was in trouble. When Raina came in I told him to take his time and let's get 20-30 run partnership. He has shown nerves in a crucial stage and this will boost his confidence also," he said.

He said he had already apologised to Gambhir for the mix-up that resulted in his partner getting run out.

"I have apologised to Gautam for the miscommunication on the field. We have not played together much. I think it was probably my fault," said Yuvraj.

Though he got his fourth man-of-the-match award in the tournament, Yuvraj sounded modest and said the team effort was crucial.

"I feel good to have contributed to the team but the victory cannot be achieved by one person, it's a team effort," he said.

He said though he cherished the centuries he had scored in his career, even scores like his 52 not out last night were special as they resulted in the team winning a crucial tie.

"Though centuries are very special for a player, when you are able to contribute 20 or 30 runs which help the team win crucial matches they also become special," he said.

Looking back at the past one year which had seen him being axed from both the ODI and Test teams, Yuvraj said he was very happy that things have turned around for him.

"Last year everything I touched turned into mud. This year it has been a good year," he said.

Praising coach Gary Kirsten for the contribution he has been making, Yuvraj said that was the vital difference from 2007 when the team was knocked out in the first round of the World Cup.

"In 2003, the team was very great (when it made the final). I don't want to talk about 2007. In 2011 with Gary coming in, our confidence in each other has grown. Players confide in each other and the way Gary keeps the team like a family that shows in our performance," he pointed out.

India vs Pakistan semi final: A dream date

It would be a dream match when India will clash with Pakistan in the semifinal match that will be held on March 30 at Mohali.

Pakistan has never beaten India in the World Cup.

However, Team India is also prepared to put forward their best strategy to take on the Pakis.

Australian skipper Ricky Ponting after losing the quarterfinal match to India said that if he had to choose between the two countries his vote would be with India to win the semifinal.

Looking ahead to the semifinal clash against Pakistan at Mohali on March 30, Yuvraj Singh said it would be another dream game.

"The India-Pakistan game is going to be another dream game after India-Australia," he added.

ICC Cricket World Cup draws record viewership

The ongoing 10th edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup seems to have hooked lovers of the sport in the country.

The first 40 matches drew a record 162 million viewers, considerably higher than the cumulative viewership numbers recorded for the third season of the Indian Premier League (IPL-3) tournament last year.

According to data from TAM, a television audience measurement agency, as many as 161.9 million have watched the first 40 matches of the Cup, as compared to the 143.7 million viewers who had tuned in to watch IPL-3 in 2010. The data has been recorded in cable and satellite homes for viewers aged above four in urban and semi-urban centres.

Cumulative viewership numbers for the 2011 edition of the World Cup are 48 per cent higher as compared to the 109.5 million viewers recorded at the end of the first 40 matches in the World Cup of 2007.

Interestingly, the live streaming of World Cup matches on the broadcaster's official website has received 55 million views across the world. The website has served 30 million video streams to 17 million users. "The India matches so far have accounted for 10.7 million streams which reached a peak of three million during the India versus South Africa match recently," said an executive at ESPN STAR Sports.

Aloke Malik, managing director, ESPN Software India added, "We have leveraged the broadcast, digital and mobile platforms to screen the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. The response has been good. We expect the traction to build as we progress further in the tournament." As many as 49 matches would be played across India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the 10th edition of the World Cup, which has returned to the subcontinent after 15 years. The tournament began on February 19 and ends on April 2. IPL-4 would kick off soon after, with the opening match in Chennai on April 8.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 SWOT analysis of Team India and Pakistan

With Sachin Tendulkar planning to quit after this World Cup, the bar is set much higher for the Indian players. Team India stands as one of the favorites alongside a formidable Sri Lanka, a strong South Africa, T20 Champions England and the reigning ODI champions Australia.

So here at Cric City we have done a SWOT analysis on the selection of Indian squad for the upcoming cricket fiesta.

India vs Australia live - stream ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

More than 20 million watch Americans West Indies vs Pakistan live have multiple ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 Social Security numbers online (SSNs) associated score with their highlights name in commercial records according to a new study announced in December from ID Analytics, Inc. The study found that rather than serving as a unique identifier, more than 40 million SSNs are associated with multiple people.

6.1 percent of Americans have at least two SSNs associated with their name. More than 100,000 Americans have five or more SSNs associated with their name.

Dr. Stephen Coggeshall, chief technology officer, at ID Analytics said. “Most of these cases of duplication are likely due to simple data entry errors as opposed to deliberate falsification. Nevertheless, organizations expose themselves and their customers to risk if they solely rely on the SSN to verify an individual.”

ID Analytics analyzed 290 million Social Security numbers, and found that 1 in 7 are associated with more than one name. Anywhere from 3-4 million names are directly used to commit fraud.

MSNBC reported the same study showed 140,000 SSNs are connected to 5 or more people and 27,000 SSNs are connected to 10 or more people.

Some of these secondary SSNs are the result of typos where an administrator may incorrectly enter a digit and then that secondary SSN is now connected to a person’s credit going forward.

In other cases it is deliberate fraud. When the same person is shown using multiple Social Security numbers on purpose then a flag is raised.

Consumers often find out their SSN is compromised as a result of being denied credit or when bill collectors call them for non payment.

India vs Australia: Arch rivals fight it out to set date with Pak

A hard battle is on at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera today as bitter rivals India and Australia – also the world's top two one-day teams – fight it out for the semi-final spot in the 2011 World Cup.

It is advantage India at the moment with the team -- riding on a charged-up spin attack -- picking up 5 wickets before Australia could reach 200.

India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni lost the all-important toss in the do-or-die quarter-final but made his intention clear that spin would be his ace weapon when he opened the bowling with Southie off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

The gamble paid off very quickly as Ashwin drew first blood by picking up opener Shane Watson for 25 runs when Australia were 40.

Yuvraj Singh then dismissed the other opener Brad Haddin, who was looking dangerous at 53 off 62 balls. Later, Yuvraj picked up the wicket of vice captain Michael Clarke, who scored just 9 runs.

Chasing 261-run target, India lost Virender Sehwag (15) in the ninth over after a good start against Australia in the second quarterfinal of the World Cup at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad on Thursday.

Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar started Indian run-chase aggressively and added 44 runs for the first wicket.

Sehwag hit two fours in his rare slow innings of 15 off 22 balls before Shane Watson gave Aussies the crucial breakthrough.

Ind vs Aus: India off to a good start against Australia

Chasing 261-run target, India lost Virender Sehwag (15) in the ninth over after a good start against Australia in the second quarterfinal of the World Cup at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad on Thursday.

Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar started Indian run-chase aggressively and added 44 runs for the first wicket.

Sehwag hit two fours in his rare slow innings of 15 off 22 balls before Shane Watson gave Aussies the crucial breakthrough.

Earlier, Ricky Ponting slammed fifth World Cup hundred to help Australia set 261-run target for India in the second quarterfinal.

Ponting hit seven fours and a six in his 118-ball 104 innings to score his 30th ODI hundred.

R Ashwin took the prize-wicket of Ponting in the penultimate over of the match. Ashwin finished the innings with 2 wickets for 52 in 10 overs.

David Hussey remained unbeaten for the champions on 38 off 26 balls. David hit three boundaries and a huge 85 metres six during his late charge against the Indian bowlers.

Zaheer Khan dismissed Cameron White (12) and Mike Hussey (3) to halt the Australian innings in the middle overs. Zaheer scalped White after the batsman added 40-run with his skipper Ponting for the fifth wicket.

Yuvraj Singh was the pick of Indian bowlers with two wickets for 44 runs in his ten overs.

Yuvraj dismissed Michael Clarke (8) in the 31st over to check the Aussie innings.

Brad Haddin (53) scored a patient half-century and added a valuable 70-run stand with his skipper for the second wicket and slammed six fours and a six in his 62-ball innings before Yuvraj struck in the 23rd over.

Off-spinner R Ashwin provided India crucial breakthrough as he dismissed Australia's Shane Watson in the tenth over.

Openers Shane Watson and Brad Haddin started off well as they gave Australia a steady start against India. The duo added 40 runs for the first wicket.

Earlier, Australian skipper Ricky Ponting won the crucial toss and decided to bat first.

In what is Mahendra Singh Dhoni's 100th ODI as India captain, there is one change to the side with Virender Sehwag coming in for Yusuf Pathan.

Australia have brought David Hussey in place of spinner Steven Smith.

Ind vs Aus: Who should India guard against

Shane Watson: Ever since the two-time Allan Border winning medalist metamorphosed into an opener, he has become a fearsome prospect. All his five hundreds have come as an opener and 19 of his 22 half-centuries have come there. Out of the 129 games he's played for Australia, he's starred in 92 wins and his average in winning games is 46.17 compared to his career average of 41.58. Add his explosive opening partnership with Brad Haddin and you know why India should be worried.

Oz Pace-Attack: The Indian batsmen will get plenty of short stuff from Brett Lee, Shaun Tait and Mitchell Johnson. While batsmen with greater pedigree like Sachin Tendulkar shouldn't have a problem with it, it's the Yuvrajs, Kohlis and Yusufs who have struggled consistently against the delivery aimed at the ribs. The runs won't come that freely against that type of bowling and how they negotiate 30 overs of hostile bowling will decide the contest.

KEY CLASHES

Harbhajan Singh vs Ricky Ponting: This is one contest that gets the feisty sardar going. Nothing inspires Bhajji more than a contest against Australia and when he sees the Aussie skipper take guard, the adrenalin flows even more. Harbhajan terrorized Ponting in the Test series in 2001 and the Aussie skipper hasn't quite forgotten that. This is his chance of redemption.

Mike Hussey vs Indian Spinners: With the arrival of Michael Hussey the Australian batting has got more batting muscle. Mr Cricket is a world class operator against spinners and his ability to dance down the pitch and negate the turn can irritate the best. He has historically played Harbhajan well and has seen plenty of R Ashwin in the nets while playing for the Chennai Super Kings.

Sachin Tendulkar vs Brett Lee: Of the 50 Indian wickets he has picked in 29 matches against them, Lee has dismissed the great Tendulkar nine times. Bowling the fuller length has generally worked for Lee against the Master with his extra pace generally inducing the error early on in the innings. But on the occasions when the legend has been settled, he has put his great eye to good use. Upper cutting the short ball, driving Lee straight whenever he has pitched up and even pulling and hooking him when he has targeted the body. Their duels in Australia three years ago were arresting. The fare could be a tantalizing one on Thursday too.

India vs Australia: Zaheer Khan slow ball yielding right results

India's bowling spearhead Zaheer Khan on Thursday said the slower ball was doing the trick for him after picking two wickets in the World Cup quarterfinal against Australia.

The left-arm paceman dismissed Michael Hussey with the old ball to give India a key breakthrough before accounting for Cameron White in the 42nd over to help India restrict Australia to 260-6 off 50 overs.

"It has been going well for me," said Zaheer, who is India's leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 19 scalps.

"The slower one is working particularly well for me. It is one of those things when things are going your way, they are going your way."

Zaheer was warned by umpires once for straying on the pitch and the seamer said they were right in doing so.

"It was dry wicket, the odd ball went inside. And because it was a dry wicket the umpires were also a bit cautious about the surface breaking down early.

"It did not put any pressure on me as I could always bowl around the wicket. In fact, it was my plan to bowl around the wicket."

Zaheer said India's batsmen would need to steady their nerves while chasing the target under lights.

"It is a good batting track. They have a par score on the board. We still have to bat well, keep our nerve and build partnerships."

The winners of this tie will meet Pakistan in the semifinal in Mohali on March 30.

Security beefed up in Ahmedabad for India- Australia cricket quarterfinal

Ahead of the quarter final match between India and Australia today, authorities have beefed up security in Ahmedabad.

Strict security measure are being taken following an Intelligence Bureau (IB) warning about a probable threat from Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) on India's World Cup cricket venues.

The IB issued advisories to the state governments and the police to be on high alert after it intercepted LeT messages discussing dates and timings of matches being played in India.

Scores of police and security personnel were seen carrying out random checks on vehicles in and around the match venue.

India will be looking to beat Australia in the World Cup for the first time in 24 years when the two top ranked teams clash later today.

India-Aus WC quarter final: Tight security greets spectators

The second World Cup quarter- final match between co-hosts Indian and defending champions Australia began at the fully packed Sardar Patel stadium, Motera, here today amidst tight security.

With all tickets sold out, a sea of humanity outside the stadium was waiting to get in even three hours before the match began as people on cars, two wheelers and on foot all moved towards the same destination.

Traffic police had a hard time controlling the ever increasing crowd which had jammed traffic from both the approach roads to the stadium. One could see over a kilometre long traffic jam from Sabarmati area to Motera Stadium, while a similar scene was observed from the road from the other side from Chandkheda area towards the venue.

Every person entering the venue was frisked several times including at the entry gate, near the stands and once after entering the stands. Following the security checks by police, long queue was seen at entry point of each stand. With the match being played under the threat of a possible terror strike security for the quarter-final is much more robust than that for the earlier two World Cup matches played here.

Injured Sehwag could miss quarters

Opener Virender Sehwag is doubtful for India's World Cup quarterfinal against Australia with a right knee problem, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said on Wednesday.

“On Viru (Sehwag) we are taking a call late in the evening or tomorrow morning before the start of the game,” Dhoni told reporters.

“Apart from him everybody else is fit for the game.”

India sweat over Sehwag's fitness

India are facing a nervous time over Virender Sehwag's fitness ahead of the World Cup quarter-final clash against Australia in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

Sehwag missed India's final league game against West Indies due to a allergic reaction to the painkilling injection he took on his right knee.

India skipper MS Dhoni confessed during Wednesday's pre-match press conference that Sehwag's fitness was still a concern for the team.

"We are taking a call on Viru in the evening or maybe tomorrow morning before the start of the game," Dhoni said. "Apart from that, all the others are fit."

Sehwag is crucial to India's chances against the defending champions because of his ability to score quick and big runs against any opposition.

Though Sehwag has not scored any of his 14 ODI centuries against Australia and his average also dips from 35.35 to 22.65 against them, Australian bowlers have always been wary of the opener.

The Indian team is also happy if Sehwag scores a cameo as the other batsmen in the side can build on the start.

"It's really good to have Sehwag opening the innings, because if the deliveries are short and to the body or somewhere else, he's the kind of batsman who can make the most of that kind of bowling," Dhoni explained.

"He can play an aggressive game, change the course of a match in the first five overs and give your team the kind of momentum that is needed."

If Sehwag is ruled out, Gautam Gambhir will partner Sachin Tendulkar at the top of the order with Suresh Raina retaining his place in the side.

Dhoni mocks Aussie tactics

Indian skipper MS Dhoni on Wednesday said Australia's ploy of targeting the rib-cage is nothing new and it doesn't worry the team anymore.

Australian quick Mitchell Johnson said they would target Indian opener Virender Sehwag with plenty of short balls as part of an overall plan to bring down the hosts in the quarter-final on Thursday.

Sehwag has so far had a good tournament with the bat scoring 327 runs at an average of 63.40 in the group stage. And Dhoni feels the short ball won't affect Sehwag's ability to score runs.

Talking to reporters in the pre-match press conference in Ahmedabad, Dhoni said: "It (bowling short deliveries) is not something that's new to us."

"Wherever we are, the shadow of short-pitched deliveries can be seen, so I don' think it's a new strategy. It's very good to have Virender Sehwag opening the innings for you."

"The deliveries will be short and targeted on the body. But Sehwag is the kind of batsman if you are slightly wrong, he can make the most of that kind of bowling."

"It's really good to have him. In the first five overs he can give your team the kind of momentum that is required."

The skipper also ruled out the option of playing three specialist spinners — Harbhajan Singh, Piyush Chawla and R Ashwin — at the Motera stadium in Ahmedabad.

Dhoni said: "Keeping the current team composition in mind, it will be very difficult to include all the three specialist spinners for tomorrow’s (Thursday) game."

Indian bowlers, except Zaheer Khan, are yet to make an impression in the tournament and according to Dhoni it's high time for them to deliver.

Talking about the bowling attack, Dhoni said: "We have relied a lot on Zak in this tournament. He has responded in a fantastic manner whenever we needed a breakthrough."

"However, other bowlers also need to take responsibility and come up with a good showing."

Dhoni wants batsmen to curb instinct

Wary of India's new-found tendency to collapse in a heap, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has set his team the target of batting their full quota even if that means less productive slog overs.

The cavalier attitude of their batsmen has proved a headache for India as they failed to bat out their full quota of 50 overs in their group matches against England, South Africa and West Indies after cruising at one stage.

"In all the games we were in a position where we wanted to accelerate and get as many runs as possible. I think that was one of the main reasons why we lost a number of wickets as we did," Dhoni told reporters on Wednesday.

Against England, India were placed merrily at 305-3 and few could imagine that they would collapse for 338 in that tied match.

South Africa further exposed their vulnerability when the co-hosts lost their last nine wickets for 29 runs to end up short of the 300-mark after a blistering start from their openers.

In their final group match against West Indies in Chennai, India lost their last seven wickets for 50 runs to get bundled out in the last over of their innings.

"Of course, you need to accelerate but once you have lost those maybe two-three wickets you need to curb your instincts and look to bat 50 overs," Dhoni said.

"Instead of looking to get 40 runs you should look to get 20-25 runs which may really count at the end of the day."

NO NEW STRATEGY

Dhoni sounded a warning for Australia's pace battery and said handling fiery fast bowling or short-pitched deliveries was not a new thing for the Indian batsmen.

"Definitely they have got good fast bowlers. But not to forget, we have won a test match at Perth and the last time we won at Durban," the Indian captain said with a wry smile on his face.

"People have been talking about short-pitched stuff a lot. It's not new to us. It always follows us. Wherever we are, the shadow of short-pitched deliveries can be seen. So I don't think it's a new strategy."

A clash between India and Australia always brings about the best in players and Dhoni expected the intensity to be high from both sides in Thursday's do-or-die match.

"In the last two-three years we have seen that the India-Australia bilateral series is among the most viewed series which means that the players are more intense on the field and they want to give their best," he said.

"They know that the whole world is keeping a keen eye on the contest between the players. That's also a reason why we are seeing more intensity and people wanting to perform in these big games.

"That's a big positive for both sides because you want your key players to perform and being intense also helps you perform."

We need to bat full 50 overs: Dhoni

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni Wednesday reminded his teammates of the importance of batting full 50 overs against defending champions Australia in Thursday's cricket World Cup quarterfinal here.

Against England and South Africa, India failed to capitalise on a good start and paid heavily for not being able to play the full 50 overs. The England match ended in a tie and India lost to South Africa by three wickets.

India also could not play the full 50 overs in their last league match against West Indies and collapsed after a good start.

Dhoni said his players cannot afford to commit the same mistake against Australia in the knock-out stage.

'It's an important game for us. It's a knock-out game and I won't categorise in any other way. In all the games we were in a position to accelerate the scoring and get as many runs as possible. I think that was one of the main reasons why we lost wickets the way we did.

'Of course, you need to accelerate, but when you lose 2-3 wickets you need to curb your instincts and focus on batting out 50 overs. Instead of looking to get 40 runs (in powerplay), you should look to get 20-25 runs which may really count at the end of the day,' said Dhoni on the eve of the match at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera.

Dhoni admitted to India's vulnerability in batting powerplay and hoped that against Australia the team would come good.

'Everybody has a role and responsibility in the side. The top order has batted really well and it means that the lower order is getting to bat when they are looking to accelerate. Keeping this in mind, I am quite satisfied with the effort. But we have not really capitalised in the slog overs or the second Powerplay. So hopefully in the coming games we can accumulate more runs,' he said.

The failures have put the middle-order under some pressure, but Dhoni wants his teammates to take it as an added responsibility.

'When you are part of the Indian cricket team irrespective of whether you are a batsman or a bowler you are under pressure. You can't think too much about it. More than the batsmen it is the bowlers who are under pressure,' he said.

Dhoni said against Australia, mental strength would be the key.

'The mental element is very important, but at the same time you have to rely on skills. Ultimately it has to reflect on the field and it's the skill that really helps you give your best on the field. Of course, you have to be in a very good frame of mind to execute your plans,' he said.

Dhoni lauded his pace spearhead Zaheer Khan for giving the team crucial breakthroughs.

'Yes we rely a lot on him to get us the breakthroughs and he has always responded well. I think the responsibility is with all the players. We have been able to capitalise on the breakthroughs that we've got. That's a big positive for us,' he said.

Dhoni doesn't fear home crowd

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni insists playing in front of a sell-out crowd will inspire his side when they face Australia in the World Cup quarter-finals on Thursday.

The Sardar Patel Stadium has a capacity of over 48 000 and there will be few spare seats to be had when co-hosts India play the defending champions.

Dhoni is well used to shouldering the burden of the hopes of billions of India supporters and the wicketkeeper-batsman said he would draw strength from the fanatical support.

"It is a big advantage," said Dhoni. "You have 30 000-40 000 people coming to the ground to cheer for you. If they are cheering for you then it definitely makes a difference.

"The pressure of expectation has always been a big part of the Indian cricket team. On most occasions the level of expectation is not set by you as an individual but is set by others."

Matches between India and Australia have produced some of cricket's most thrilling contests in recent times.

"In the last two to three years we have seen that India-Australia series are among the most viewed which means that the players are more intense on the field and they want to give their best," Dhoni said.

"They know that the whole world is keeping a keen eye on the contest between the players.

"That's a big positive for both sides because you want your key players to perform and being intense also helps you perform."

Australia's fast bowling trio of Brett Lee, Shaun Tait and Mitchell Johnson are all set to test the notion that India's batsmen are vulnerable to short-pitched bowling.

However, Dhoni said: "They definitely they have got good fast bowlers. But don't forget we have won a Test match at Perth (which historically has produced one of world cricket's quickest pitches), the last time we won at Durban (against an impressive South Africa pace attack).

"People have been talking about short-pitched stuff a lot. It's not new to us. It always follows us.

"Wherever we are, the shadow of short-pitched deliveries can be seen. So I don't think it's a new strategy."

India go into the match having seen promising positions squandered by collapses that saw nine wickets lost for just 29 runs in defeat by South Africa and seven squandered for 36 in an 80-run win over the West Indies.

For a team that prides itself on its batting these are concerning statistics but Dhoni said: "In all the games we were in a position where we wanted to accelerate and get as many runs as possible. I think that was one of the main reasons why we lost a number of wickets as we did.

"Of course, you need to accelerate but once you have lost two or three wickets you need to curb your instincts and look to bat 50 overs.

"Instead of looking to get 40 runs you should look to get 20-25 runs which may really count at the end of the day."
